Newbie Domain Name Questions

Hello Everyone,

Here's are a few of my questions:

I found a keyword phrase in Google keyword tool with 33,000 exact searches per month in a niche I'd really enjoy providing info for, but there's not much money in the niche. Do you think it would worth doing CPA say with a Netflix banner and monetize the site that way or is that too little traffic to expect any return?

Also, I found a 6 syllablel phrase for a domain name with a .net extension that has 74,000 exact searches per month. Well, it turns out it is a song so half of Google's first page is taken up with videos and lyrics websites so is it not a good idea to purchase this? I do love the name and it would fit in with my niche that I mentioned above. Is it something I could resell since the name is so beautiful? I really do need to make some money.

One more question is this: I found a domain name that has 24 characters, is .net, has 33,000 searches per month and is very memorable. Do you think this would be a good purchase? I don't know anything about reselling domain names, but I seem to love to try to find them. It's like an adventure!

One reason I'm trying to get some advice is because I made a big mistake regarding a domain name last week...I found ohjoy.net was available and the next day went to purchase it. In the meantime I think my registrar, godaddy (that's where I was checking for domain name availability), purchased it and was selling it for $1400.00+! (That's fair since it's a free for all and I didn't purchase it...) Now it's being sold by buydomains.com and the domain name is in the address bar. Another day I found a 4 syllable .net domain name that was available. No more than 5 minutes later I went to purchase it after checking for another name and it was no longer available! I think godaddy's computer snatches up short domain names if people don't buy them immediately because that didn't happen with my long domain name searches. I tried searching at namecheap after that experience and something similar happened there! Well, now I never check to see if a domain name is available at a registrar, but check by typing the name into my address bar. And none of my domain name ideas have disappeared since then...Ooooh the lessons a newbie has to learn!

Thanks for your thoughts!

Ruth

From here out, use Domain Search when researching domains. Sometimes it isn't 100% accurate, but it usually is.

There are too many factors that we don't have that would determine whether or not you should buy the domain.

I have been flipping domains quite a bit now and have done several WSO's on it.

I think that there are more factors than just keyword searches per month when it comes to a domain name's value.

Sometimes it will depend on a wide variety of things. If you can use the domain for your own purpose, then it has value to you. If you want to sell it, you will have to see how valuable it is to the other person.

That's not saying too much if a domain doesn't come up when
you type it into your browser; only that it's not published and
not that it is not registered yet.

If you're at a place doing a domain check and you see it's
"available", be certain that it's not available because it's for sale.
I've seen domains available, then went to my registrar and it
says it's not available. Then I go back to the domain availability
place I was at prior, looked again and saw where I missed it's
available because it's for sale by an owner.

If you do see a domain available... or at least see one that you
are being told is available, then go to register it and it's not avail-
able, go to a WhoIs and check when that domain was registered
to see if it coincides with the time you were checking it's avail-
    ability.

    CASE IN POINT:

I checked the WhoIs on ohjoy.net and found that it was already
    registered.

BUT on December 11, 2004... and was not registered anywhere
    close to "last week".

      Hi Last Warrior,

I just went to domaintools.com and saw that right under "creation date" which you mention is an "expiration date" of December 11, 2011. I clicked on the tab "whois history" next to "20 records" and at the bottom of the page in a long list I see "2011-03-04".

Yes, maybe I made a mistake and it wasn't really "available". I don't remember the exact date all this happened, but maybe it did happen on the 4th and I am correct.

What I do know for sure is that I'm not making anything up. Honestly, you kind of seem to be accusing me of lying. I think you really should give people you don't even know the benefit of the doubt. Especially since now I've looked up the record and the website seems to have become available on January 7 of this year. This is all new stuff to me so I don't know what all these dates mean exactly, but I do know I am very sincere, my conscience is clear. I really think you could be a lot kinder and check your facts more carefully before you post responses.
