Hey Guys,

I'm relatively new to IM, so I have a question for you all. I currently have 1 affiliate site up. I created this site in early November 2010 and 2 weeks ago I made it to the #8 spot on the front page of Google for my keywords. As you can imagine, I was excited to see that the things I was doing was working. I was starting to get traffic and getting clicks on my links. I was in that spot for a week and last Friday when I came home from work and checked, my site was gone and I cant find it anywhere on Google.

I've read about the "Google dance" and the "Google sandbox", but I'm wondering if anyone here might have some idea what happened or if any of you have experienced something like this.

I was also wondering if there was a tool I can use to see exactly where my website is ranked in Google right now.

Thanks for your time,
Fred

Go onto google and type site:"yoursite url" if you see your website you have not been removed from google.

    Is your website content original?

What changes have you been making lately to your site?

      Thanks for the quick responses,

My content is original. Here are the things I changed:
      1) New Theme
      2) Rewrote my About page
      3) Combined my earnings disclosure and disclaimer pages into one page
      4) Added a few backlinks, maybe 15 over the month of Feb and early March.

I looked and my site still shows in Google using site:"yourdomain"

My url is gamingheadsetinfo.com. Try not to laugh too hard, this is my first and only site so far, so I'm using it as a learning tool.

        Hi Fred,

When I put "gaming headset info" (in phrase match) you're on Page 3 in the UK.

I'm not laughing at the site either, I think it's a very good first attempt, it's not spammy, it looks clean and is way better than the first one I ever did.

I'm not sure why it's dropped like this if you've had it since November, other than it being a victim of Googles Algorithm change. I also can't see why the changes you've made would cause this to happen unless you got a backlink from a particularly bad place.

AnimalSpirit. Fred has already told us he has added 15 backlinks in February. Nothing odd about that.

    Hey Fred,

Your sire looks great. The main problem why any website "disappears" from the search
results is because of a high amount increase of backlinks in a short period of time. For Google it doesn't appear natural and they think that you are trying to scam them. So they drop your rank really low.

    Hope that helps

If its only been gone a day or so I wouldn't worry really. Keep doing what you have been doing, and give it a few days.

I have sites that sometimes disappear for days and then re appear (sometimes in a better position than before).

Since you are still indexed (proved by using the site: operator) then your site is likely just being compared to your competition. Obtaining links, adding or modifying content can trigger this to happen. This is a normal part of ranking in Google and can last a day, up to a couple of weeks.

If the changes increased your SEO in anyway, then you'll likely pop right back into your previous position, or come back a little higher in the serps. People call it the Google dance - which I think is a silly term. Google is simply weighing your site and its pages against your competition for all of your keywords - you shouldn't be able to find your site ranking anywhere in Google.

Many sites go through this (all sites in my business have at some point), and it lessons in frequency as your site/content gets older, or when you achieve a position 1 ranking.

If you are actually able to find your pages ranking in Google somewhere, generally deep in the serps, then you may have incurred some type of penalty.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll just continue to update it and slowly and consistently add backlinks like I was before.

Whatever you do do not stop building backlinks... If you stopped, the backlinks you were receiving will look unnatural... I suggest using a service like socialmonkee.com (it's free) to bookmark your site daily which will bring a little traffic but will add backlinks and will help you stay on the first page.

I have a similar site that does this all the time. One day it will be at number 5 the next day at 85 then a week later back to number six. Just keep doing what your doing and don't worry about Google. They are kinda like a girlfriend... They might get mad at ya, but they still love ya

    Hope this helps

I was having the same problem with 4 sites... after I used the old building site model for clickbank, amazon,CPA,etc products...keyword in a com, net, org domain ,between 4-10 unique articles about the product and some generalities... All of this were in 1st google page, until now...
First I have thought the site is in google dance, because ,exactly one week the site appear for main keyword in 1st google page ,one week between 79-87(acording to rank checker...and the URL were always the tag URL,not like until than the domain name). Now all the the sites (from 1 month ago) are staying in positions 83-87 ...so, is not google dance.I have verified almost everything: the site is in google, not seen any penalty in google webmaster tools, etc.
PS: My sites daily updated are not having any problems...so I think this is one of the keys...

This problem is VERY common and it will come back for sure! I was trying to rank for a keyword and I started on Page 25. After some day, it was Page 14. One day latter, it completly disappear for 3 DAYS! After that, I was ranking on Page 3.

This will happen for you too I am pretty sure if you keep the good work, it will come at the top.

The best thing you can do in this scenario, is to add a nice fresh piece of content - say a 600-700 word article, and then DO NOT build any more links, until you see your site return to roughly it's previous ranking position. You will want to make sure it's definitely back - wait at least 1 week, even 2, before starting to build links again.
