How do i get traffic from twitter

Please i need help with this traffic of a thing. I know i can get good traffic by posting in forums, commenting in blogs and i also know that is my SEO is good i can get tons of traffic from google and other search engines. Now i've heard people swear that they get huge traffic from social networking sites like twitter and facebook. I don't know how they do it. This is how i did mine. Where i'm i going wrong. I will use twitter as a case in point.

I opened a twitter account. After that i started searching for people in my niche and started adding people that are following them. These people will ordinary be interested in the product that i'm selling. Then like 70% followed me back. Now i'm following 1,985 people while i have about 1,040 people following me. Right now i can't follow more people because twittter says there's a certain ratio of people you can follow relative to those that follow you.

I've see people that have like 5000 followers and are just following 100 people. How do they do it.

I also want to know how many post i can make on twitter in a day. I'm saying this because i have just two articles on my website. Do i keep posting the links to those articles since it's the same people that will see it. Is is not seen as spamming?
