Best method for split testing landing pages?

For simplicity, I've got static html landing pages. What's the best method for split testing?

a) build links to each page (default.html and default2.html)?

PROS: there is no redirect penalty from Google
CONS: I've got to always maintain 2 landing pages if I've got links out there to both. And how do I link build for two different pages with articles, backlinks, etc?

b) run a script that randomizes and redirects?

PROS: I can build links to the root site and not have to maintain 2 pages forever.
CONS: does a redirect actually hurt me at Google? If so, this is a con.

Can someone tell me if there's another way that's better?

Google webmaster tools are the best... You can split between x amount of different landing pages and it automatically rotates them and shows you the results of the most effective... Keep the best one, create two more and keep playing them off against each other until you hit a decent conversion

Use Google Optimizer, you can fine tune what you describe.
