First Time Buying Hosting, Hostgator questions!

I've been using Weebly as my editor/hosting for a while now as it's simple to use, I can have my own domain names, etc. However, I'm wanting to get a higher degree of customization by learning to use my own hosting and wordpress themes but I don't know what plan I should be getting, what features I do or don't need, etc.

Should I just start with the hatchling plan?

After about how much traffic does my site have load-time troubles / need dedicated hosting?

Thanks in advance to any warriors that can help shed some light on this for me!

- Brandon

You can go for the baby plan that they have. Make sure you use a coupon for them, a quick google search will show you many coupon codes

Also, I've been using the baby plan for some of my sites for sometime now and it has given me no problems. There live support is the USP

Baby plan is a good starting point. If you have more traffic than that plan can handle they will generally move your site/s for you to a higher plan at no charge. Their customer service is fantastic.

I've worked with them before for smaller projects and I've got to say their support is top notch, but their speeds are "OK".

I currently work with HostDime. Great support and faster speeds there (1gbs port).

Same here, the customer service is awesome!

They have a live 24/7 chat support, you can ask questions before you ever buy. The support is just as great after you buy.

I've got multiple sites (very small client specific municipal sites, a few others) with them, the speeds are ok but the customer service is fantastic.

Their referral program is decent too.

I've got a very badly designed joomla and virtuemart site that I know sucks processor time with them and never had complaints...

I think there a lot of good choices these days, and mostly you don't here horror stories as in the past. Larger hosts like hostgator and godaddy are more locked down in what is allowed on the server, and are not always a favorite of web developers. That said, they are quite dependable. Medium sized hosts like hostdime, arvixe, or servint, may give you a better sense of communication with support, where you often speak to the same people repeatedly, and can do more things for you quickly.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Thank you for the feedback guys! My Weebly sites load very quicjly right now I just don't to swap to another type of hosting and have 300 visitors be a problem, though I doubt that is much a load for them. When people say HG's load times were just "ok" I mean are they still quick enough you don't have any reservations about putting your money blogs/sites on them?

I don't see how 300 visitors is going to be a problem for any host. Just make sure you join a host that does not oversell. The hostgator plan is a good one. I said it cos i've used it before.

I find Hostgator loading times to be faster than others (such as godaddy) but when it comes to sites that need a more dedicated host and/or have more that 10,000 per day I would still look elsewhere.

When using wordpress be sure to was the free plugin W3 Total Cache this will delete all the unnecessary flies that build up and slow down your site.

Most bad reviews about godaddy is usually about slow server. Hostgator is better in that regard.

If your thing is fast servers then you should go for a host that uses litespeed server as opposed to Apache.

    300 visitors be a problem
Get up to 3,000 uniques a day and you'll still be OK on the babycroc (or whatever they call it) plan.

Don't worry, when you need to upgrade, they will be the first to let you know.

The HostGator baby plan is MORE than enough for your first 50 'small' sites. After that, you can worry about upgrading.

I would also recommend the baby plan! I've been using it for 3 years and I can't complain about anything really...

Most of the sites I have are ran with Wordpress on my baby plan

You should not have any issues with the current traffic you have on Hostgator. I'd recommend the Baby plan, as it only costs $1 more (if you pay monthly) than the Hatchling plan, and this allows you to host unlimited sites there.

IF you have multiple domains than i suggest starting with the baby plan. And regarding dedicated hosting, i suggest buying only when you have a rank smaller than 5000.

Im using the Baby plan and i ran wordpress sites, got no problems yet. I recommend you the baby plan because you can have several domains, in hatchling only one.

My friend who has 25,000 hits a day had to upgrade to dedicated hosting, which can give you some reference. Before hitting 10,000 you should still be ok with regular shared plans. If you interested in a coupon messege me.

Hostgator's ftp for upload and download of larger files is slow. For really large files like 700MB, sometimes the server will cut you off. Not sure if anyone faces the same, but I'm on Baby Croc plan.

HostGator is one of the BEST hosting to get start and also for medium size of website.

I have been using more than 3 years for most of my websites like wordpress, minisite, membership site and html pages.

Excellent customer support 24/7 and very helpful on technical support. I was installing other third party software into the hosting and encountered some problems, their technical support always help me to resolve it and make it work. They tell me what has happen and then enable/ disable something in the hosting to make it work for me.

Baby plan is great to get start. Unless you have thousands of visitors every day, then you might consider better plan in their service so your website can load faster.

    HostGator hosting? Thumbs up! :-)
