What DO you want in a product?

I'm on the road to creating my first ever product. So, a few questions are in order. What kinds of products do you need or want? What features are important in a product? What issues do you want said product to solve for you? Thanks for any input you can give me

I want a product I can buy and download immediately. I don't want to have to read it or implement any system described within it. The mere fact that I own it should be sufficient for the money to start rolling in.

Can you create a product like that? If so, I'd like a free review copy, please. If the money does start rolling in, though, I promise to send you whatever you regularly charge for the product, but on an installment plan, just in case the money doesn't continue to roll in on a steady basis. And, I reserve the right to suspend sending that payment for the same reason.

Please let me know when it's available. Thanks!

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    • I want something that over delivers. If you can do this, you will be amazed how people will respond to it. I want something that when I have bought it and used it, I think to myself...Wow...this is great. It was definitely worth the money I just spent!

I want a product like Dan said. Something automated, and, immediately spits, so, much money from out my laptop, that, I'll need an ambulance to the hospital from all the paper cuts on my face.

A product that will put me in the position like the woman who extorted the Guru to give her a secret software to be rich. Now when she dances it is only at elegant invite only political parties(as a guest and not the help).

OK guys, give her a break. She's smart to try to do some market research. How many people launch products without bothering to do that?!

It would help though, Charlotte, if you narrowed the scope a bit--throw out some potential topics to get some feedback. So many different interests floating around this forum.

Of course, you do run the risk of someone else seeing the responses you get and running with the idea... So it might be better to set up a survey elsewhere and create an incentive for people to go respond.

Haha, it's ok Tracy, I am used to Dan's wily ways

I am know I am being quite broad here, but I want to get a feel for things before I jump into an area of IM, KWIM?

Anyway, potential topics, um ok off the top of my head...

Good idea about the survey, I might try that.

Rather than pulling topics from the top of your head
(which may be aiming a little high!) take a deeper look
        inside your heart.

        - What topics are you passionate about?
        - What topics do you have a talent for?
        - What topics are you already knowledgable and skilled at?

Once you've identified your core topic you can then go
and do some research to check that there's a hungry
        market for it.

Then do further research to find a focus for your product.

The quality of the answers you receive will be dependent
upon the quality of questions you ask.

        Dedicated to mutual success,

        Shaun

Whatever product it is, it should deliver on its promise and more and really add value. Good info products strike a good balance between theory and implementation i.e. they tell you the why, what, and also delve into the how, and give you action steps on how to make the information in the product work for you. Remember that true learning only comes when you take action on the information provided, so aim to address both the theory and the practice in your product.

Although there seems to be dozens (maybe hundreds) of products on these topics if you include clear concrete processes then your product will stand out a little above the crowd. If you provide troubleshooting (like what to do if the person follows your process and they do not get the results your product is suggesting they should get) then your product will definitely stand out from the crowd.

Basically, just think of why people get so frustrated with the current products out there. I think a lot of the problems are people present the information in these products as if it will absolutely always work and in the real world that just doesn't happen. So, simply providing a chapter on what to do about that. How to troubleshoot the problems. What could be wrong and how can the person solve the problem? I think product creators forget many times that although to them everything in their product might be as clear as crystal to someone else everything can be new and at each step the product buyer could make one or more mistakes in execution.

These are the kinds of things that are left out of every product I have checked out in this IM / MMO industry. I'd reckon that addressing these shortcomings would do a lot to cut down on support and increase customer satisfaction, and more importantly, their results!

As you can tell from the first couple of replies, you may need to be more clear about what TYPE of product you're thinking of creating.

If you're thinking about creating an IM-niche product, you may need to wait until you've been in the niche as a consumer long enough to know what is needed / wanted.

Have you got an area of specific expertise? I think as the comments are proving everyone wants a crazy automated money machine, unfortunately that wont happen through a products, more of what you do on a day to day basis.

Im intrested in traffic generation at the moment, more good traffic means more sales... (obviously) but its a good topic for those new to the industry.

Tracey actually I was serious. Maybe I am naive, but, I don't see anything I would be interested in a book that could help me in business. I need services and immediate direct solutions. A software tool or a person doing the work. Anything else is not necessary to me. I can't think of one thing. However, I will try.

Lets see here, How bout a product that is a step by step method. Features....sources. Actual resources that the customer can tap into and make money with through the method you provided. A one stop shop solution maybe a great option as well, though, some will criticize you for writing the book to promote your own services. Said product should solve financial problem of the customer of course. I will leave you to decide what audience your trying to appease. i.e. beginner, intermediate, advanced marketer.

I think that most new marketers really need an E-book explaining to them how this industry of 'marketing and promotion' really works. Something that will teach them to start with themselves first. Exploring their own passions and interests relating to what they can do online. Most people simply follow what everyone else is doing. Your product needs to get everyone to start thinking.

Everyone has something valuable to offer the world. It's up to them to first find out what that is and then market it.

As a writer I want to be able to read something simple in plain English. I don't want hte long convoluted version that has me spinning I want it KISS'ed, but wiht nothing left out. Another bug bear is waffle to fill it out. If it is a ten page product that write it in ten pages and charge accordingly.
Also remember to put it in audio and also video

You mean any product for any purpose?!

Like is there some category the ideas should be on such as Personal Productivity, Website Development, Outsourcing, etc?

I agree with Tim. It needs to deliver on it's promise.

If you are thinking of publishing an ebook, I'd much rather see a 10 page document full of concise easily actionable points than 90 pages of fluffy text with big margins and huge line spacing.

If I buy a product, then I like it to get to the point.

Look at products/services which are already selling well and work off that.

What people say they want in a product and what they'll actually buy are often two very different things.

I want something that actually works the way the owner says it does. I dont want a lot of BS and fancy talk, I want the straight facts and some kind of proof it's going to work as advertised. I'm thinking of something I'd order online that would be sent to me by post or courier, not something downloaded.

    I'm curious...

Why don't you just review the subjects of threads started over the last week on the Warrior Forum?

You will find dozens of questions many of them which are asked repeatedly, and should generate many ideas for you. Those repeated questions indicate a need. Then it is up to you to determine how to fill those knowledge gaps in a way that sells.
