Well, it really does depend on the route you're going to take.

That said, I think a good starting point would be to learn how to install and use Wordpress on your own domain name. From there you'll pick up things about SEO, writing and so on.

The good news is there are loads of free Wordpress guides available around if you search. You don't need to pay for anything expensive when you're learning the basics. Eventually, as you learn more, you will get a feel for the kind of direction you want to take.

If you really want to learn all about online business including Seo, Social Bookmarking, Press Releases, ETC. why you don't try "The Challenge" by Ed Dale. I can assure you, that's worth reading for. Try it.

        This ^

Personally, this is what taught me the most when I first came into IM. They teach you in detailed videos. I hear the course has now got even better since a year ago when I took it. They've added more and streamlined it a bit.

For the right price too. Can't argue with FREE can you? :p

Definitely go through that and then keep reading around this forum (don't buy anything until you're done with The Challenge.) After you're through with The Challenge, you will have a clearer idea of what you might want to do from there on.

The number one place to start in my opinion is learning anything and everything that you can about keyword research and judging competition.

Those subjects will lead you into a very diverse array of topics that you'll need to learn in the future. But most importantly, these are the areas that people assume aren't important, and later learn that they are suffering from their lack of knowledge about them.

Learning about these topics will give you an understanding about obtaining traffic to your offers/sites, and understanding the mindset of your visitors/traffic.

You'll need to know about them for SEO; writing your content for your site, your promotional material, finding sites to promote on, buying traffic, optimizing your articles for your visitor's expectation of its content, understanding competition in your chosen niche (or of the keywords themselves), and the list goes on.

So, focus on keyword research and judging competition in the beginning, and that will prepare you for the next steps - creating your sites or your products. If you create a site or product without understanding your competition or the keywords that you will be targeting, you may end up struggling in the beginning.

So, learn about them and most importantly, understand them. Don't get sidetracked in your research, if you find something interesting, bookmark it, and return to it later.

Have fun. To your future success!

Making money from internet marketing isn't about those technical skills, at all.

It isn't about what software you can and can't use.

I earn plenty of money, and the only thing you've mentioned that I'm able to use at all (and not very confidently) is "Word". (And I used to use that, when I had to, by "pasting stuff into it" so that I could send it to people. )

You have to start with an understanding of marketing.

"Technical skills" (fortunately for all the people like me) are not required at the outset, and in the long run they have very little to do with whether or not one will eventually be successful.
