Facebook fan page and personal profiles. Which is best?

Hi all. :-)

A couple of questions for the Facebook experts:

1) Some marketers create personal Facebook profiles, while others create fan pages. Which is best and why?

2) How can you control what others see when they land on facebook com/yourusername - I see that some pages show the wall, others the general "info", others a welcome message etc. And I don't see an option to change these in my account.

Here are examples of accounts that show very different things on their homepage (look at the tab selected on the left):

facebook com/YaroStarakBlogger (wall)
facebook com/neilkpatel (info)
facebook com/problogger (welcome)

This is my first post and I can't post links. But I needed to mention the examples above.

Thanks.

    1. I think the Fan Page is better. Can't really explain why, but mostly because if someone "likes" you, this will be posted on their walls (just like the updates you do on your page). Besides that you can upload apps, and you have the option you asked on your 2nd question.

    2.
1st Example explained: This is the default setting.
2nd Example explained: This option is available for some kind of Fan Pages (I know the first and the second option on Create a Page | Facebook "Local business or place" and "Company, organisation or institution", there could be other options that will do the trick). You can set the "Landing Page" on your Edit Page option -> Manage Permissions -> Default Landing Tab. As you can see on your 2nd example.
3rd Example explained: Default setting for "users". This can't be changed.

Fan Page is the best plan. Personal profiles are just for that, I have seen people use personal profiles for list building but I have also seen people lose their accounts if they try to post business and affiliate links on a personal page.

Also, fan pages allow an unlimited number of followers while personal profiles max out around 5,000 friends. go with the fan page.

Thanks for the very informative replies.

I had a personal account. I had also set up the vanity url to
    facebook com/FirstNameLastName.

I went and created a FAN page, while I was still logged in to my personal account. It allowed me to create it etc - but now my facebook fan page has a URL like
    facebook com/pages/FirstName-LastName/7345932500252

How do I set up the FAN page to facebook com/FirstNameLastName?

Do I have to delete the accounts and start all over again. A bit confused :-)

    Thanks.

Go here to pick your username

You can pick your username once you have enough likers to your fanpage. I think last I checked it was like 25 but they could have changed it.

So, initially you promote the other link and once you have enough likers, choose your username and then your link will be: facebook.com/yourusername

Yes, with fan page you don't have the limit as how many people can be there.

  • Hi there.

Yes definately a Fan Page for business and a personal profile for your friends.

Theres nothing more annoying than someone requesting you as a friend and immediately throwing an affiliate link at you. It's just not the way to do it and people won't take you seriously.

As people have already mentioned here you need 25 likes to be able to chage your URL to something a bit prettier.

If you have a good friends list you can always ask the ones you know well to go to your Fan Page and like it for you to help you get to your 25 likes. This is what alot of people do.

Then when they have liked your page, this will show up on THEIR wall and then their friends list will see it and hopefully this will help kick start your Fan Page business a little bit more for you.

Also, if you have a blog then look at the Networked Blogs app on Facebook and the comments app. The comments App will allow your blog readers to leave a comment after your posts which will then be posted to their wall and Networked Blogs will post your latest blog post to your Fan Page Feed. This is a good way to get your blog readers to know about your Fan Page and your Fan Page Readers to get know about your blog.

Phew! I Hope if thats not too confusing that it helps you a bit

Also you could try www.thesocialnetworkingacadamy.com from Jo Barnes. It is an excellent resource for learning about how to market with FB Pages and has tons of free videos etc to help you.

I am NOT an affiliate but if there was an affiliate program here I would join it. It is really good resource for newbies to FB

      Thanks for the info, Debbie.

I'm just starting to get into using FB/Fan Pages/Usernames and it's confusing as hell. It's easier to set up a website than it is to stagger your way through setting up FB.

Anyhoo (can you sense the frustration?), how can you get people to like your fan page when you can't even get a username until you get 25 likes (or is it Friends? Or do Friends = Likes? So confusing...) first. So where do you send them then?

I actually had two FB accounts until I discovered that you're only allowed one, and then it got all messy with texting from my cell if I deactivated the wrong account.

I need to get a simple step-by-step e-course or tutorial to walk me through it. Five hundred million users can't be THAT smart, can they?

I think Fan pages are better as you can get more people to like them then your regular account.
