Keyword Research Or Blowing Smoke Up Your @ss?

I keep seeing threads with goofy formulas for finding keywords.

They have equations and kei and numbers from a dozen different tools.

I have two questions:

1. Would you be any better off using your goofy keyword equations or just throwing darts at niches and picking them randomly? (I think you'd do better throwing darts based on many of your results I read)

2. Is there anybody here that does this full time that uses some keyword formula to identify niches or where to spend their time? (keep the technique yourself, but only full timers answer)

And a final tip for if you are hell bent on the goofy formulas:

Google adwords is the only data that you care about for determining google traffic. Not their keyword tool, but BUY some keywords and get REAL TIME traffic data, it will be worth more than any money/time you spend giving it to some guru or using in some outdated and unreliable keyword tool.

This is very true and there is a warrior called Jon on here that has a very good report that he sells for an insanely cheap price of $7 that actually shows how to do real keyword research using google adwords traffic and not just the tool. Very well worth the read.

I wrote about this in my blog.. check sig for the article.

If I do any keyword research at all these days, it's just to get an idea of popular searches and to mine some long tail stuff.

I find the competition numbers are usually irrelevant to me as once I have a niche blog up and running you find it ranks and gets traffic for all sorts of long tail phrases that you never would have thought of anyway.

Once you have that going you have your own source of all the keyword information you could possibly need.

I find that using a thesaurus to identify related terms to common keywords in a niche can be a powerful method.

I think that because there are so many software driven tools in play that often offline common sense will create more original content.

The old and the new can merge.

  • thanks all for the replies

interesting nobody is explaining some of these techniques or who is pushing them.

certainly somebody is spreading this nonsense to play with keyword counts all day and saying it will make you lotsa money

my bet is the people that are making a full time living with keyword formulas are the ones selling the formulas

the real money can own a niche regardless of what a formula says imho
