Walk-On Videos Good or Bad?

Question..

You see it often, the happy perfectly dressed marketing reps walking onto your web-page to talk about whatever it is you are selling.

Does anyone have an opinion on these and do they help conversions at all?

As a customer I ignore this feature. I am more of a reader so I also find this to be annoying and a distraction with possible negative effects. I wouldn't give up on buying a product due to this but maybe other customer would.

But of course it is probable that some people are usng it with success.

Its a good topic, sometimes i do find it annoying and sometimes I dont... I dont like it when they use some company to do it who has no passion or change in tone of voice...

I guess the thing to do is to try and see what happens? If you see your site visitors clicking back, or less sales then you know it isnt working. You could find it might increase them? You cant say until you've tried

It really depends on how it's setup and whether or not the person is a good salesman or not. I've seen some sites that had walk-ons that completely wrecked the sale, and others that were actually pretty captivating.

Like with anything in depends on the execution of it. Could range from conversion killer to conversion booster depending on how it's pulled off.

For me, it's a lot like videos sales pages that auto play. I hate them because I have to do something to get them to stop which detracts from the sales page in general.

The way I look at it, people are at work or up late at night with kids or a spouse sleeping in the other room. If you have something on your sales page that automatically plays you stand a pretty good chance of having your page closed close to automatically.

          Just my 2 cents though...

Personally, I don't like it. It's irritating and interferes with what I want to look at. I find it very intruding, it's like someone butting in to your conversation (they're butting in to my headspace as I'm looking at a website).

So imagine how amazed I was a few weeks ago, when a potential client of mine said "Wow, I have just seen this amazing thing on a website where someone walks on to the screen and talks to you. It's so powerful. Can you do that for us?"

As I am doing a very low budget favour for them, I politely told them that we could it, from a technical perspective, but that the cost may be prohibitive.

The point is, that I was stunned to find that a business person, that I know reasonably well, really liked it. I just couldn't understand why?

But I suppose we're all different.

  • I personally dislike them very much. I have no idea if they increase conversions or not because I've never used them.

I didn't particularly like them when they came out a couple years back. I still don't like them because like someone else noted, I now have to do something to make it go away.

The other thing that strikes me, is that even if you liked it the first time, you might not like to hear the same thing again when you go back to the site. there is probably a way to avoid that happening with a cookie, but I don't know that for sure.
