Hi,

I got a question. I want to sell a product on my website.
But I don't know how to let people download it from my website.
I just want them to go to my url and the download will start immediatelly.

Any help?

thanks in advance.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking but if you upload the document to the folder for your domain the url for the product would be www.domainname.com/documentname.extension

A link on your thank you page that a customer would be sent to after they purchase would point to this document or product... not sure what you're selling... pdf? program? From there a customer could click on the link or right click and choose "save file as"

Does this help some or could you elaborate some? How are you going to sell your product... what kind of product...

Upload your file as a zipped document and then create a direct url link to that file. When customers click on that link, the download will start.

You can also offer your link as a direct link to your PDF document if you do not wish to have a zipped file.

Upload the pdf to the public_html folder. So the path will be:
        http://yoursite.com/public_html

Your customers will go to http://yoursite.com/yourebook.pdf

You will have to give them the url - notice that public_html is not in the url you give your customers.

Revenue Gal, that works really well. My pdf is large and very slow to appear when clicking on the link. Downloading a zip file is more appealing - even though it takes just as long, at least your customer is not sitting staring at a blank white screen, wondering if the pdf will ever show up!

Now can someone please comment about how that is not secure - how anyone who knows how to type site:yourdomain.com into google will be able to find it? Am I right? Is there a better way that is more secure?

I have been using e-junkie as I do not want to store my product at my site.

In order to secure a PDF, you can bury it several folders deep
which is still not completely secure from Google and the other
          SEs, but it helps.

The best way is to place it in the "home" directory with the
public_html folder and access it with a script such as RAP, or
          possibly even DL Guard.

This is called "above the root" and a browser can't access
          it there.

When you open your c-panel in an ftp client, it opens to the "\"
or "home" directory. That's where you see directories such as
"www", or "public_html", "ftp", "mail", and other directories.

A web browser can only read the "www" or "public_html" directories,
but none of the others so you can create a folder in the "\" or
"home" directory and place all your downloads there and don't
have to worry about a search engine finding them.

The downside is - you have to have some kind of download script
          to get it.

          I sincerely hope this helps.

Exactly - that thank you page can get found. I am just getting started on listing my first product at ClickBank, so the question of the OP is very relevant to me. I have been happily using e-junkie. Now I have to figure out how to securely host my own product.

Micheal, that helped immensely! Now I get it! Thanks for this explanation. I know I have seen DL Guard praised here at WF by several members. I will take a look at both RAP and DL Guard.

Hope the OP is getting all the information she needs from this thread. This is a very helpful thread...

Yes, DL Guard is most likely a great product because
Sam has been working on it for at least 4 years I know
of, constantly tweaking and refining it.

              I'm not sure what it does other than protect your product;
I use RAP myself since it offers the added benefit of being
able to pay your affiliates instant commissions through Paypal.

Yea, the 'extension' part is the key. So if for example you had a .pdf doc, upload it to your site, then get the path, and add in the documents name and .pdf. Then when they click on the link it will automatically start downloading.

What bretski is saying, is that you could simply send people straight to the items url.

If it's located at yoursite.com/imlost.pdf, then you send people straight to that URL.

If you want the download to start at yoursite.com, then you could simply have yoursite.com redirect them to the yoursite.com/imlost.pdf location.

If it's a wordpress site, the "Redirection" plugin is a good start.

Ejunkie is a good solution if you are wanting to secure your downloads. DLguard (I think it is called) is another solution if you want to secure it on your own site. It's pretty clever and comes with instructions on how to set it up but it can be a little confusing for newbies.

Zipping the file is also an option since it won't get indexed and people won't be able to find your download by doing a search BUT your thank you page might be found... I find that ejunkie is the best alternative; a couple of bucks a month and you got no worries.
