So, what would it take to rank top 3 in Google for "make money online"?

Mods: I apologize if you deem this post to be in the SEO section, I'm just putting it in the main forum because I'm more interested in different opinions from everybody, not just specifically SEO-minded people. Please move or delete it if needed.

Guys and girls,

Here's a question for you... what would it take to rank in the top 3 on Google for the ultra-competitive and (possibly) fruitful term "make money online"?

As I've gotten more and more into SEO and experienced success ranking lower competition keywords, I've been thinking about taking on a term which most just shy away from, or consider it almost impossible to rank up there, just for fun and to expand my horizons.

I don't care if it takes a year or more to get up there, but what would it take to rank such a term? I know the game with this type of terms is a lot bigger than trying to rank for lower competition niche keywords.

I would also have just about as much money needed to throw on this project for SEO, so I'm not necessarily looking for "bum marketing" methods.

Thoughts?

    Top 3 in Google for the topic "make money online" is not easy. For make money online is a very hot keyword in Google now. When people want to put Adword ads for the keyword make money online, they should at least pay about $3-5.
    But if you want to do it, that's cool. Just like you say, you might need to spend lots of money to increate the PR, do optimize your website/content. And you might need to wait a little long time to see your target result.

    Or maybe you needn't focus on the keyword make money online, you can try to pay attention to some keyword relevant to make money online. With these keywords, you can get much traffic or sales as well.

      368,000 Global Monthly searches (phrase)
      Top site has 13,635 backlinks

      You're gonna need some serious cash flow to get ranked up there. And time too!
