Hands down the most important skill I have learned when getting started with Internet Marketig is how to build a list and then use that list to make money. Before I started building lists it was sort of hit or miss - if I got enough visitors to the site I might sell a decent number of products, but with a list it really is like an ATM, money on demand.

The first time I realized how powerful a list could be was last year when I was in a car accident and needed money for medical bills. I sent a discount offer to my list and got 7% conversion. Since then I have done 3 launches to that list and even though I never hit the 7% conversion again that list is a heck of a cash cow.

      1. Do a keyword research to know whether someone will actually come and see your content.
      2. Learn SEO, probably the most important skill out there.
      3. Understand Content syndication and backlink creation.
      4. Have a firm grasp of niche activity.

      Overall, go through The Challenge.

Even in that case I would build a list... you are wasting a lot of good traffic to your site which might never return otherwise until your social network is built. Build a list of the visitors until then and launch your social network with that list once it's built and you get yourself a nice base of users the very first day it opens up for registration.

Marketing skills are and should not only be limited to the tangible skills.

For me, a good marketer is someone who can empathize with his customers -- someone who knows how to relate and identify with his market, someone who's able to visualize beyond his own bias. He should be someone who can see through their eyes.

Hey,Vogin,at how many million searches should I be looking at?And the market is large and unsaturated overall.Plus for example if I target the people the right way when the main attraction of the site will be a big social network...the world of mouth is spreading it.
I don't think a lot of people found facebook by searching for social networks at google

Craig,so copywriting is a skill needed to be mastered for writing articles too,not only writing ads?Because again-my niche isn't "Make 300$ a day in 30 days"

The keyword research that I just made showed that there are 50+mil searches on the 2 main keywords of my website and the competition is relatively low.But I can double or triple that number if I also focus on a few other keywords with low competition

Management is essential to me. You have to learn how to manage a business, take it seriously and not get lost while doing several activities yourself and (later, maybe much later) managing outsourcers to do it.

@Cesar,as an aspiring enterpreneur I try to get knowledge in all tech areas, although I find the leadership part more appealing,I do realize at 18,with no track record or capital,I must roll up the sleeves and work my ass off in order to get to the level where I can outsource and attract investors for the growth of the website

That's great, a will to learn from several areas is another essential skill, but one that is inate, not learned. And leadership skills are essential when you see yourself managing a team and helps in almost everything else on life.

I would say knowing how to drive targeted traffic to your site (offer, page, whatever). Obviously, without targeted traffic you have nothing!

P.S. Consumer psychology, experience with traffic and conversions would also be good to have.

What skills other than SEO should I acquire to get targetted trafic? What books would you recommend to read to learn SEO?
What copywriting literature would you recommend for my case?I do realize now that in order to be a good writer, you must learn copywriting.
But again I'd not want to go into materials that teach you writing compelling ads such as "Buy this program for only 499$(which represents two rehashed books 10$ each) only in the next 24 hours and learn how to get laid or die as a virgin"

So I'm not afraid to put in the required time and effort, just need right directions.Thank you all for your time!

You are a content provider. The content you provide must add value to your readers lives. The only way to do that is give them content which they perceive as "wisdom".

I think many people will agree when I say you must master the art of patience and perseverance to the best of your ability.

Here's a few things, as others have mentioned, that are of importance when creating/making money off websites:

        - Keyword research
        - Ask yourself if the keywords you are going after, are relevant to a person which wants to purchase/indulge in your particular niche. Understand that in order to get a more realistic idea of the traffic for the keywords you are researching, you should look at the 'exact match' statistics only. If you target the wrong keywords you have fallen at the frontline.

        - Customer psychology
        - Consider what mindset the customer is in for your niche, what do you think they would expect when they land on your page? Would they want short accurate information or a large choice of information? Would they like to see a neatly designed website with a nice layout or would a sales type page better suit their needs? These are a just a few questions you can think to get the ball rolling.

        - Writing
        - Writing skills are of a great importance to marketing, while many people purchase articles, sometimes simply to save time, you can never ignore the need for the ability to better yourself at writing as it is used in many facets of the online world. I am gradually putting more effort into always trying to improve my writing bit by bit, it is slowly becoming better and in turn, will help increase my sales. After all, what is the online world about, content.

        - The need to learn
        - It is important to always try to keep up-to-date and have the need to learn new things in the world of online business, as the surface of the landscape can change very fast.

        - Creativeness
        - Applying what is successful and making it your own, being creative with it, this make you stand out and I think being creative is great for marketing. After all some of the most successful people in the industry all had creative ways of doing things (which now don't exactly sound so creative ) I believe subtle creative details and changes can go a long way, so I always try to make little changes when I can and see what works.

There are many more skills that can always help. Infact, I think just about any skill can be applied to marketing (alright minus one or two ), but those are just a few that I think are important.

Nice one The major target group would be 16-25 year old people. But I will try to reframe it so that it will appeal to little bit older people too.
I'll give facebook for example again. They first hooked with Harvard students, then adding universities students only it becomes somewhat exclusive, something people want to be a part in,then they grow with ligthing speed and people start registering because everyone else is registered-the masses pressure factor
Can anyone recommend materials about copywriting/writing that would help me with my site?
I did my best to describe what I need.
@sarlat,that's clear, mate.I do believe in creating big value before waiting for something back.Though it's not scientific themed site,so would not call wisdom but more like really useful information/knowledge that's not out there or is hard to find
AlanT,I'll get to that point too and start adjusting accordingly but am not to that point yet as I have to gain knowledge on web dev first and prepare the content before rockin n rollin the site

The most important skill to master is "testing and tracking".

If you have no other skills, this one will help you develop them.

One of the most important skills to be able to stay focussed if you are building on a micro level. The most important skill is to be able to make many websites and learn how to outsource jobs to maintain work flow.

Discover "who" your target market is. Learn everything about them. Their quirks, habits, fears and problems. Then offer them a simple solution. This is an age old formula that always has and always will work. Good Luck!

It seems you are just starting out so I assume cash is especially tight. If I am right, I will suggest if you do not know how to build websites, you learn wordpress as it is easy and very flexible. If you do not already know this, I can send you a link to free tutorials.

Equally important as was said earlier, you need to learn copywriting.

and perhaps most importantly, you need to be focused as it is very easy in this field to spend 2 years jumping from one project to the other and achieving nothing. Finish a project before moving to the next. This also happens to be a management/leadership skill.

@InitialEffort,I'm learning the programming skills but for this project only to make true.If it thrives,I'll be doing the business site mainly in my future ventures
@BeGlobeSo,actually I myself,do represent the target group perfectly. However,I'll still try to borden my horizon,so that larger audience would like the site.
@Matt,I'm mastering time management,as there's no more important resource
    @Scott,cheers,I'm doing that too
@abdulsanni,brother,I can get some cash from the three Fs.But as I said I will have a lot of time to spend on this project the next few months, solely focusing on it,so I will get rounds of investments and hire others AFTER I pull it off.I don't think I should spend 2 years hopping from projects, because I'm not exactly seeking career in programming/web dev.If I don't make this project happen,I will have knowledge+xp from it and if I make it great to an extent,I'll also have a track record.I'm focusing big.Instead of building 1424 ****ty sites(you actually wrote 1 at a time),I want to build 1 that has immense value.

Failure says "I don't know how",Success says "how do I learn"!

Where to learn copywriting for my case?Copywriting anyone?1st time...2nd time..

    Hey Tony,

    Re copywriting.

Can't recall the name right now, but if you dig through the copywriting forum here, you'll find reference to an organisation offering a number of quality courses...(The name is an acronym for something like American Institute/Association of Writers and Artists...)
You'll also find a lot of pro's in that forum with good advice.

Other than that....The bigger your list, the bigger your sales....I have now seen the literal truth of that demonstarted so many times- Time spent efficiently building a good list seems to inevitably yield large dividends, regardless of what niche you operate in.

    Best wishes,

    Piero

As far as IM business is concerned, everything comes down to three things

    1. Content Creation

    2. Getting targeted traffic (traffic Generation )

    3. Converting the traffic (Conversion )

If you have new site , you need to learn how to generate traffic to your site through SEO , Social media and others.

You should also learn about selling . On how to transform your visitors into your prospects . So, I advice that you learn some copywriting and list building techniques and strategies .

It is also important to learn how to measure the performance of your sites . So, it is important that you study on how to track and test .

There are lots of others, but there are the most important .

    Hope it helps.

Tony - forgive me for saying, but you seem to be all over the place.

You want to build a content site with ads, then talk about copywriting (which is usually done to sell things, not for advertising) and then you mention a Facebook type platform that will become a social network - which definitely DO NOT launch with ads first (think Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, etc... that didn't think of monetization until well after they had Millions of eyeballs and LOTS of reputation)

There are 3 different business models here --

      1. Product based site - all marketing is designed to sell products or services (your own, affiliate, licensed, etc...)

      2. Monetized content - through ads and/or paid access (Large authority blogs, 1000-page content sites like how to mend it .com - Find out how to mend just about anything (I have no interest in this site, just an example I came across to illustrate)

      3. Social networking - where the goal is to let others generate content, where your site sits in the middle between content publisher and content consumer (article directories were the first type of sites like this, now it is social networking sites)

Which one you are following will heavily influence your marketing and marketing skills you require

        Well said Jeff.

Precisely my thoughts. I think what you need for now are not marketing skills, but business ones. What's your biz plan?

If you're doing a content site that's going to be a social networking site, you need to budget at least 3-5 years for your site to become an authority site. With FRESH UNIQUE content every single day, an army of backlink builders, and competent tech developers. And then, there's still no guarantee of success because the market may just shift at that time.

So my advice? Figure if you got the time and resources to commit 3-5 years to your project before thinking about seeing any results if you're going to authority site route.

Forget copywriting, traffic generation, and list building. Find out if its even feasible. Persistence is great. But in this case, it's LOOOONNNG DRAAAWNN out persistence, so strategy is more important than marketing for now.

I would not say that there is one skill that is "better" than the rest. It comes down to what works best for you and mastering that skill set before moving on to another one.

Pick 2 skill sets and master them first. If I had to recommend a skill set for you to tackle first it would have to be video marketing.

Video marketing is an up and coming skill set that is flourishing all over the internet at the moment.

    Good Luck.
