Yet another money making thread!(With a twist!)

Hello members of WF, I come here tonight not to ask how much you can make, how do you do this... there's a ton of information about that already.

I have one straight question: Can a program be as marketable as ebooks? It's more of a personal problem with ebooks... I like the idea of adsense still tho. It's because I am going in programming at university, and I really want to make a living off of this, AND a living off IM at the same time.

If you mean a software product then absolutely. There is a lot of money spent everyday on software.

There’re so many IM softwares are crazily sold in the market every day, like article rewrite tools, XXX automatic submission tools, keyword finding tools, too much to mention.

As a programmer you can make good money developing your own software instead pushing others. You can make money programming games or creating apps for Google's android. Don't relay too much on adsense because the way Google changes things adsense may be next.

Phone applications always looked like nice thing to do. I wonder if applications for the app store(Apple) or the market place(Android) are really that profitable. I guess there is more money to do on app store, but my heart belong to Android, as I have a samsung galaxy S. I also don't have any machine on OSX, so I don't even know if there's the possibility to code for iOS on windows or any linux distro.

If you are planning to tap into the software market, then you MUST have a unique idea for the app. At the same time, you need to make sure there are actually some people who would like to use the software (a.k.a high market demand)

    Lyper,

Programming is one area where it's HARD to find good people. Or at least, people who'll write clean code.

And IMers use tons of different software for niche research, autoblogging, wordpress management, article spinning, sales management, affiliate management, ad infinitum.

Two ways to go about it:
    - Have a unique software offering that makes things simple for them
    - Have a software that does what other software do - but BETTER than them

If your software can meet one of the above criteria, add some good marketing and you have a killer product.

However, since you mentioned that you'd like to make a living off of this, it is a good idea to program for other people - custom software development, tweaking etc. That way, you'll have some money on the side while you develop your own killer software.

    My 2 cents. : )

Absolutely! Building even simple software with a free vs paid version (or by using trial versions) is a great business model. Look at how many wordpress plugins are marketed these days. The possibilities are endless and pretty exciting once you get thinking.

Where I work we buy finacial calculators from a guy who works out of his home. I've talked with him a few times and sometimes I can hear his kids playing in the background. But he makes good change from just us alone from the 12 or so calculators that we use.

We also use a product called Nitro PDF that allows users to edit pdf's at a fraction of the cost of Adobe Standard or Pro. They are also the makers of a print to pdf program... forget the name.

Find a need. Fill that need and the world is your oyster...

Thanks for all the replies. When I mean I want to make moneh with programming, I still want to fullfill a job in the atificial intelligence field(going to uni soon) but I want to live nicely off IM while im studying and even a little nice extra income and better understanding off that big money machine. I am someone that loves to find his information free and I am a big fan of the free software movement, therefore I just can't get myself to sell ebooks and other content that I think hold no value. By that I mean no value to me, but they still must have some if people are buying them haha. Also, my first language is not english and I don't feel confident enough about my grammar to write articles about physical products. Thanks for all the feedbacks.
