What's a good conversion when sending out and offer to your mailing list?

Lets say your list has 100 people on it. Is a 2 percent conversion noramally the base or 5, 10 percent?

If your list has 100 people on it you first of all have to take into consideration your open rate (not everyone will open your emails every time), and then your click through rate to the offer.

It's impossible to say how many people that actually click through will buy, because it depends on how well you treat your list. I know a few list owners who get 10%+ conversion rate, but I know plenty others that get less than 1%.

  • It depends so much on how you've built your mailing list (i.e. is it a buyers' list?), as well as how appropriate the product is for the list (is it in the right price range? is it something the list wants?).

All you can do is test things, keep a record of the results and crunch the numbers. No matter how you try and build your list, you'll find that each list will convert to different types of offers.

It depends on how you got those subscribers. Did you get them with E.G. a poker product than you shouldn't promote something like dog training. But if they liked your previous product. Than your conversion should be high.

Additionally I believe the price point matters also...for example pitching real estate via email lists can be tedious work with conversions less the 1% if at all.

This is really an impossible question to answer...there are just too many variables that affect the overall conversion rate.

However, I will say that mailing to my own house list, and split testing the subject line and email copy, I have had everything from 2% to 19% conversion rates.

It depends on the subject line (and Open Rate %) and the email copy itself, the CTR%, and the product conversion rate.

One thing I do know is that once you get a good relationship with your list, you should expect to see much higher conversion rates than "cold traffic" to the same salesletter...

So, you can use this as a bit of a benchmark to work with.

If your salesletter converts at 2% for all traffic in general, then you should expect to see a big boost to that number if you have a solid relationship with your email list and you send them to the same salesletter.

That can be a bit of a help if you just need a basic gage to determine how effective your list building efforts are.

    All the best,

Okay so lets say I get visitors to opt-in to get a free ebook.

Bottom line will most of these people buy future offers?

I mean 2 senerios can come up:

#1. My list can be buyers so lets say 10 percent of the 100 opt-ins buys.

      OR

#2 My list can be a bunch of tire kickers. 1 percent buy out of the 100.

If #2 is what happens then should I just focus on building a HUGE list to hopefully get more money out of the list?

I never put an offer in the auto-response messages. I get people to talk to me by emailing me, and then go back and forth with a few emails, and then recommend them to a product or service. The conversion rate is so much higher like that.

I once sent out an email that only got 2 clicks... good thing was it got 1 sale.

To date it's been my most successful in terms of EPC.

I remember hearing someone say they don't worry about open rates and click thru rates. While I don't quite agree (I think they're good indicators to the health of your list) it's a fair point.

Personally I get up to 50% open rates and over 70% CTR's, depending on the subject lines and body copy I send to my lists. This has come from nearly 500 split-tests over the years. The higher your open rate and CTR, the more subscribers will see your offer.

However, the actual sales conversion rate will naturally depend on the conversion rate of the sales letter/video.

    Hope that helps,

    David.
