Google will now scan your emails to show relevant ads. Invasion of privacy?

Yes I know you can turn it off, but how many will? Isn't this taking it a little too far?

Google has been displaying ads for a long time on Gmail. The simpler solution would be to just stop using Gmail if you consider it an invasion of privacy. I don't see any point in complaining about Google displaying ads for a service that users are not paying for.

Uh, they've always been doing that. I think they're saying they will now give gmail users better options to give feedback on the ads they are already getting from their emails. LIke when I go to my spam folder in gmail I get a lot of "spam" recipes, ha ha, not really relevant. Wrong kind of spam! Spam is a processed kind of meat popular in Hawaii in case you didn't know.

This was the innovation Google came up with to pay for it when they first created Gmail and they caused a bit of controversy then, but it died down. They claim they don't read people's emails individually. Instead, they just use computers to pull relevant information from your emails about whatever it is you are reading. Totally not new and it seems that no one has been bothered by it.

Yea... I guess we just have to leave it. I think Google is one of those guys I trust online so basically, I'm not really bothered about the whole new upgrade.

How can you trust a company that have been collecting data from unsecured wifi connections across the globe.

Google has been scanning your email in order to display context sensitive advertising for years now. Their new system is more accurate, thats all.

Invasion of privacy? No way. No one is forcing you to use it. Use hushmail or something like it if you're that paranoid.

Anybody seen the Time magazine March 21 issue?
TIME Magazine Cover: Your Data For Sale - Mar. 21, 2011 - Computers - Advertising - Science & Technology

I have read it on the plane when going for a vacation - I read magazines mainly on airplanes... Well, the cover story didn't spoil my vacation but it was a good food for thought. Everybody knows everything about you or, as the caption says:
"Everything about you is being tracked -- get over it"

Yep Google may be placing ads in your mail, but does anyone really think that they have enough employees to read your emails - not hardly and illegal - at least here in the UK.

The Google software is simply responding or reacting to pre established keywords or phrases in your emails.

I like gmail very much and I don't take too much notice of the ads. If I did and they got on my nerves, I'd simply not use the service.

If you are paranoid about Google, then start to worry when good looking Google staff (if they have any!) arrive at your door and offer to take your spouse to an all expenses paid dinner (without you, of course) and you never see or hear from your spouse again .

Now that could be grounds for complaint .

Just one of my more stupid thoughts,

    Jeff.
