Video Making Service...

I've been told my whole life that I have a "radio voice", once recently by a retired radio producer. I was just wondering if this is a skill that could be translated into making videos for people in the IM world? How important is the voice for people who outsource their videos?

I'd be interested to know this too. I've been told I have a face for radio, so this is clearly something I should be looking into as well.

I'll page the resident voice-over expert and see if we can get her to comment here.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

    Hi Doorkicker,

Just my 2 cents, yes, voice over work is very important in video work. I would think you would have no problem finding plenty of people willing to pay you for voice over services.

I'd recommend offering your services up on some place like guru.com, freelance.com, etc., to start with you might even want to try posting a gig on fiverr.com. The pay on fiverr.com's not that great, only $4 a gig after fiverr.com takes their cut, but it would give you a chance to practice a bit and get some testimonials if nothing else.

You could also offer to do the first few for a reduced fee, or even free, again to get some exposure and some satisfied customers. And don't just think about video voice overs, you could also offer to do audio work for people wanting to convert .pdf files, reports, transcripts, etc. Lot's of times people are looking to offer different modalities of an existing product.

    Good Luck!

    Mike

Voice and audio quality will make or break a video project. Back up flashy graphics with a whiny voice or bad recording quality and you've got a dud.

Great audio and a compelling voice can make powerpoint slides sparkle.

      A common rough flow is:

      establish concept
      write script
      record voiceover
      build graphics to voiveover
add music bed and sound effects

Radio personalities are a fairly good source for pro quality VO's, though they may charge alot if they are in demand.

This is exactly what I teach! Check out one of my latest articles, "Voice Over Recording Using Audacity and a $49.00 USB Mic"

I'm on a mission to show folks how pro quality audio does NOT have to be expensive or hard. Hope it helps!

        Cheers!

Production companies (myself included) pay LOTS of money for professional VO work. What you should do is get a good Mic, an audio recorder, and record some scripts to make a portfolio. Once you do that, you can send the samples out to producers. You'll be surprised of the response you get!

Thanks for the info! I will do this. I think I like the VO idea over actually producing videos. Any script recommendations?

                  My 2 cents...

I think a good voice is essential for doing voice overs for promos, like what you see in movie trailers. But for someone putting together a full video training course of hours and more, the voice is not as important, but it's the content that matters. It'd not be very feasible to hire a voice over artist to do 10 hours plus anyway.

The person that writes the content is usually the best choice to voice it if they have the gift. The writer knows exactly how the inflections are intended to be, therefore communicating the meaning all the more clearly.

You should do it. Get practicing right away!

Check websites like elance.com. There's TONS of people looking for voice over work. They'll send you the script, you just record and send them back the mp3. I've done some good stuff over there with voice over.

A good VO really does make a difference. We do video tutorials and have different versions (i.e. accents) depending on our listener. Even the subtle things, like proper enunciation, are important when you take a global audience into consideration.

Personally I find making my own video's/audio's are best because my subscribers form a bond with me and want to 'hear it from the horses mouth', so to speak. Maybe you could create your own product teaching people how to make their own video's with Camtasia/Screenflow or their own audio's with something like Audacity? Just my 0.02 worth.

    David.

Put it to good use buddy! =)
    Voice over is highly in-demand!
Do some samples and post it in WSO or Warriors for hire section.
Give some free reviews, start off with an affordable price.
Once you build lots of portfolio, you might consider raising your price.

Or simply offer your service on elance, freelancer.

Or You can offer video intro or even tutorial series videos.

If you are comfortable on camera, why not be a 'Video actor'?
Companies pay $300-400 for just 30 seconds of footage.

Try offering your services to Voice and Script International Dubbing Subtitling Translation Company - VSI | VSI Group They used to be just in London, but now they've got offices all over the place. They're usually my first port of call when looking for a voice-over artiste.

You can buy a recorder, and record MP3 audios. Use the audios in a slide show video. Start yourself a service, it could be helpful for alot of small business owners out there..

voice is crucial, but loads of competition so I think you'd need to be clever at marketing. Hook up with a video maker too so you they do the video and you add the voice. I might add voiceover section in my site, so keep me in the loop.

Don't forget, there is also a market for making audio (mp3) versions of ebooks. A partner of mine was looking for just that: to have somebody to read his book by chapters into audio files. (Preferably, adding some intro/end music, too).

The guy who was supposed to do it got sick, unfortunately...

      Istvan,

Can I ask roughly how much your partner was going to pay for that service? Just curious.
