Moving To New Hosting - Multiple Sites With Wordpress!

Hey guys,

I am finally getting to grips with changing my hosting.

I have put this off and off and finally bit the bullet and am going for a niche shiny VPS hosting account.

My question is that I have quite a few sites and obviously I will change the name servers and then copy and paste all files "as is" and it should work.

However my question is I have wordpress blogs on there as well.

How hard is it to transfer a Wordpress blog to a new host?

It will be the same domain just a new host - how do i do this part?

All the best,

Chris

ask your new host to do it for you. it's a free service that most, if not all, hosts will provide for you when you open a new account.

if you are going to move the wp site manually, i have a video on my blog (in sig) showing how I do it.

Yes think i will need to do it as it is for a few sites.

Can you please pm me a link to the video?

Not complicated at all - if you have the basic understanding of a database-driven site... and have some familiarity with the necessary tools: FTP and phpMyadmin (usually, accessible from cPanel)

    - download via FTP all the files and folders of your WP installation
    - Export the MySQL database of the blog via phpMyadmin as a .sql file
    - upload the files and folders to the new server
    - create an empty database on the new server and Import the .sql file via phpMyadmin
    - if necessary, edit the wp-config.php file to reflect the changes in database name, DB user, pw and/or DB servername > upload it

Normally, if the nameserver info has been edited properly at the registrar... it should work.

There might be necessary some small tweaking/editing but I am not going to talk about them if you are not taking this manual route.

    Hi Istvan,

    Thanks man!

I think i can follow that pretty much.

I will let you know how it goes and make backups of everything first!

    Thanks again,

    Chris

      You are welcome

Yes, it is quite simple when you have the basics. It sounds like a scary task for those that never heard about FTP, didn't ever open phpMyadmin and "know" only to do a fantastico install.

Otherwise it is a very simple, boring, routine series of steps.

And YES, back up everything before starting. Sorry that I forgot to mention: for me it's so obvious that I often forget to mention it...

It should not be a big deal, ask your hosting providers to do it.

When moving WP blogs from one place to another, I would use WP Twin.
This tool works very good. Perfect to take backups too.
