Should I be using folders to categorize my content?

Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a snag.

Previously, I had been putting all of my content on the main root of my website. For example, http://domain.com/article.html.

Now I have quite a few articles up there. The website is ranking well, but will it look spammy if I don't have the content in folders? Will it affect my rank if I put it into folders? Is there a risk Google will re-evaluate my site if I put it into folders?

I am not trying to rank any of the content, just the main index.

Thanks!

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
But you can move stuff as long as you remember to setup a redirect.

In my experience all sites grow. The first one I did had 7 pages and I didn't think it would ever have any more so I just had them on the floor of public_html.

Now it has about 40 pages with more on the way and I start folders regularly. They are a big help keeping a site organized.

What I did was just leave the pages with page rank where they were. The ones that didn't have it were scrunched into folders without redirects. (Hey, I was busy at the time.)

Categorizing your content is absolutely essential in terms of good SEO practices. Always categorize your keywords along with your content. Search engines will reward you for it.

Think of your website as a regular book with a table of contents.

    Well you should be!

This is another reason to create categories. You can then promote secondary keyword phrases to each category.

    eg

    www.domain.com/blue-widgets/blue-widgets.html

THEN you can backlink to this category using "blue widgets"

    Make sense?

PS. Make sure you update your htaccess file to ensure proper redirects to your newly updated site when making the changes.
