I've never heard of that happening (doesn't mean it can't - just never heard of paypal doing that).

I'd go to my paypal account and check there as I think it is a piece of info requested by paypal. Most banks, affiliate programs, etc - anything that handles money transfers - usually require an EIN or SSN for those in the U.S.

I expect some of the new tax reporting regulations will require paypal to have that info if they don't have it already. However, I wouldn't give the number over the phone but would just enter it in my paypal account info.

David, I could call you and spoof the PayPal # so you think it's them.

Never Ever give out that type of info over the phone...Never...

Goto PayPal and see if they actually called you. Ask them. See if there is a request from
    them in your account.

If not then contact the authorities in you area and let them know.

I'm just saying that PayPal would ask you to fill out the info in your account before they
would ask you for it over the phone.

    Hope that Helps,

Michael's right. In fact I know of a couple of ways to spoof caller ID. One involves a service called 'Camophone' (now known as spoofcard), the other involves call forwarding.

You need to call paypal asap and report this, as they don't do that type of thing.

Definitely need to contact Paypal just to make sure your account hasn't been compromised and alert them - it certainly wasn't them, banks and financial companies do NOT do this (I used to work in one!).

Probably getting all their info together for the big 1099 fest next January, I think I had to verify mine in my account but they didnt call I just got a message on my screen. Best to just login and make sure the info is in there.

No, I would sincerely doubt it was really PayPal. Banks and everyone in the financial services industry knows better than to ask for such information by phone. Not only is it a bad thing to do, it is information they can't confirm, so it's not worth them getting it that way.

If you really thought it was PayPal, I'd ask for a call-back number and check that one before returning the call. Asking for financial information over the phone is a very bad business method and I would be shocked if PayPal used it.

I would definitely call Paypal just to make sure it was them but I doubt it was Paypal myself...but you never know.

It's very simple -- use PayPal's contact us feature. They will give you a phone number on the page to call along with a unique PIN. Call them and ask if they had called you for your SSN. If they have, then you can give it to them right then and there. If they haven't, then you know to ignore it and maybe send a complaint to the FTC (calling the police is a waste of time -- they don't deal with that).

Paypal's page on identity theft. I'd bet all the cash I have on me that they never called you.

Don't give sensitive details over the phone. There are so many caller id spoof things out there. It's always best to contact the number instead of the number contacting you.
