Someone copied my articles to hundreds of directories - any recourse?

I just discovered that someone went to one of my sites and copied my articles word-for-word and used Article Marketing Robot (I'm assuming) to blast them to hundreds of article directories, linking back to their own site. The great thing is that a lot of these articles are now outranking my own site for the keywords they were targeting.

It's easy enough to send a DMCA notice if a single website copies your stuff, but what am I supposed to do in this case? It would take me a month to file 1000 DMCA notices, and I doubt many of the article directories even care.

In a lot of cases I wouldn't even care about this, but like I said, the crap he blasted out is outranking my site now. The articles are just on directories; not on a website this person owns, so I'm assuming there's probably nothing I can do about this, which is pretty crappy. Looking at their other articles, they did the same exact thing with other people's articles: blatantly stole them and submitted them to thousands of directories under their own name.

I feel like doing the same thing back to them.

    That's so stupid!!!

I'm pissed just reading this and I don't even know you.

I don't have any advice I just want to reach out and give some support. Here's the thing: Karma is a cold hard b*tch. He'll/She'll get what they deserve.

Issue DMCAs to the ones outranking your site. That would be a good start. If you issue the DMCA to the article directory's host, they have to take it down.

Instructions and sample DMCA are here:

I haven't tried this before, but it might work.

Take the best ranked 5 to 10 copies of your article that you're seeing on SERPs. Visit the directories that are publishing them, and inform them that the article was a copy of yours (show proof that you are the original author), that you have no problem with them continuing to host the article, but that you would appreciate if they could change the links on the article back to your site.

Even if it works in only one or two instances, you'll still win - in the sense that you get readers of that article back to YOUR website.

Has anyone tried this? Did it work? Please share.

    All success

If you contact article directory owners with your complaint, most will delete the article from their databases.

If you give the article title and author name in a PM, I will look on my directories to see if a takedown is necessary on my end.

When I see something like this, I will disable the offending account and all articles connected to that account. I do a full take down on someone who has one stolen article, because if they stole one, they probably stole them all.
