Real purpose of a capture page?

So I've realized the 3 main ingredients is to have a blog, a list, and a capture page.

When exactly do you send people to your capture page? I've got a capture page designed and i'm trying to figure out when do I use it? Do I have them opt-in for my free ebook and redirect them to the ebook? Or do I have them opt-in for the actual blog, and then have another opt-in form on the blog for the ebook?

When do I choose to send people to the capture page vs. the main blog?

What is the best way to utilize a capture page?

Thanks
Michael

You use a capture page to collect leads, so what is the purpose of the traffic source. Is the purpose of the traffic source to buy something, or is it to leave a comment on a blog or is it to opt-in for a free report.

What is the call to action of the traffic source, and then you will know when to use a capture page.

As an example you may write an article on an article directory and instead of sending them to your blog, send them to your squeeze page to pick up your free report. After they put in their email address then send them to your blog.

How do they receive their free report if I redirect them to my blog?

You can email the link to your download page. You are probably going to want them to double opt in to your list or confirm before you give them the download anyways.

Or you can just add a link on your download page that says "click here to visit my blog and get more free tips"

I like to send all cold traffic to my capture page, then once they have given me their name and email address, they receive the download page for the freebie. Don't be so concerned about sending them to your blog unless you have a clear monetization plan on your blog. You may not need your blog, you might make more money simply emailing offers instead of sending people to the blog.

            Hope this helps :-)

The ultimate goal is for them to see my quality content on my site and then purchase a product from an affiliate link.
The ebook is just an enticement for opt-in.

Not necessarily... It would depend on your business/marketing model.

I have seen very, very successful marketers who do NOT have a squeeze/capture page - just an optin form at the bottom of each post.
You can sign up on the list that will notify you each time the blogger has a new post... + occasionally, he will send out 'broadcast' messages about product he promotes as an affiliate.

Other blogs have their optin form in the sidebar(s).

When your goal is to make your visitors to subscribe/optin to your list in exchange for some irresistible offer

You are over-complicating it big time!!!

Why the heck would anybody opt in to just see your blog? (unless it is a closed membership site)

I'd go back at least one step... take a look at your 3 "ingredients" and ask the obvious question: WHY do I have these things and what do I want to do with them? What is their role in my business model and in my 'funnel'?
Just because you read that others have these elements/components - doesn't mean you must have and/or use them.

I understand that I'd want to deliver them the free ebook. So the redirect after the opt-in would go to the ebook? Then how do I get them to get to the blog, therefore reading the content, therefore potentially buying the product?

I feel like the capture page is a great way to generate a list, but at the same time its one extra obstacle in getting them to the meat of the message and in the middle of the funnel.

Would it be more effective to have them just come to my blog, opt in on the blog for the free report therefore throwing out the capture page all together?

Sorry if I'm over complicating this, I'm just a natural over analyzer and want things to be just right if at all possible. "Measure twice cut once"

    Over-analyzing doesn't help either

Sometimes the sales funnels are not like a straight line... You may want to look at this diagram posted by Paul:

According to Dan Kennedy, your capture mechanism has only two purposes:

      > Capture your lead's information.
      > Secure permission to use that information.

It's not to give away freebies or direct traffic.

As I read it here, your main goal is to have your leads make a purchase using your affiliate link. Whatever you do should be aimed at making that happen, period.

As you test, you may find that for some traffic sources you want them on your list so you can point them to the most relevant content on your blog leading to making that buy.

You may find out that giving them the freebie straight up, with links to both your blog and the product works best.

You may find that sending them directly to a relevant section of content, bypassing the capture page altogether or presenting it as an exit pop, works for you.

      Or some combination...

There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. You just have to keep trying things until you find what works for you.
