Web 2.0 | Squidoo | Hub Pages - What ?

Hi Everyone,

Please excuse my ignorance - I've tried my very best to get my head around what Web 2.0, Squidoo and Hub Pages are.

I've even sort of got my head around social bookmarking sites (to a point) but the others have baffled me.

Can anyone explain in plain English what these are and why I would use them to get my current web sites and blogs better listed ?

Thanks in advance ...

Jane

Hmm well Jane Web 2.0 is merely a name for websites that share information in new ways as opposed to static html did in 1998 for example. Think user generated content, cross platform sharing even commenting on articles.
Social bookmarking platforms are a good example of a web 2.0 property as is Facebook as well as Squidoo and hub pages as you mention.

The widely accepted theory is that web2.0 properties are often not limited by 'no-folllow' attributes attached to their outgoing links.
This allows for things like PR and anchor text to pass on and thus increasing the importance of your website to Google.
Also, because web 2.0 properties are often designed to allow for their user to easily add content and even share that content with others, it is thought to be relatively easy to get more backlinks to your site as opposed to 1998 when you had to personally ask website owners to place your link on their website.

Note: To give a complete answer to your questions one would have to write a 1000 word essay. I would recommend that you enter some keywords in my and your own post into Google and try to find out what it is all about.

    Hope that made sense

Squidoo and Hubpages are both web sites where you can write a page of information about any topic. Basically, they're article sites, but they like to describe themselves in different terms. They are supposed to be super authoritative pages that provide lots of links to the best sections of the web (in other words, a hub).

Squidoo came first, if I recall correctly. They call their web pages "lenses" because they focus on a specific subject. Seth Godin created the site, and he likes to invent new buzzwords - but he is a really smart marketer, too.

Hubpages is an easier to understand name and concept, but it's basically the same. It even copied the basic workflow.

The quality of the pages on both sites is a bit variable, as they are designed and built by the general public, plus internet marketers like us. So some of them are massive and in depth labors of love, and other pages are essentially sales letters. However, both Squidoo and Hubpages are clamping down on this type of over commercial content.

Take a look at the sites and you will quickly see what they are all about.

      Thanks Mark & Jim,

      I've got a better understanding now ... but can I ask ...

From a marketing point of view, should I be producing those sorts of pages to promote my website ?

And how do you go about finding them to get links on ?

      Another BIG thanks guys

These properties will give you backlinks and link juice but will also give you another property that can rank on the first page of google. This helps with traffic of course.

I use fiverr to have my lenses created for cheap. Then social bookmark them to help with backlinks.

    Good Luck

Thank you Coby - so does that mean I have to go out and manually produce these types of pages ?

Squidoo I've heard of and I know it is a case of signing up and creating a 'lens' which I understand is a kind of one off web page - do I simply link that content back to my web site ?

As for Web 2.0 and Hub Pages - where do you go to create those ?

And do you create them as you would as Squidoo lens and link back to my main web site ?

        Hi Jane,
Hub Pages is actually a website it self: HubPages
and I believe there is a huge list of web 2.0 properties here on WF, try the search thingy and enter something like "web 2.0 list"!

About the linking, simply have one or two links within the content you created that points back to your site.

If you want to outsource all this you could go on Fiverr and find a gig that does that for you.

        Regards,
        Mark
