Squeeze page lead conversion rate - What should I expect?

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the forum, and since you guys seem to really know what you're doing I had a couple questions for you with regard to list building.

1) What kind of lead conversion rate should someone with completely generic untargeted traffic (like the kind from a viral video for example) get from a good squeeze page with a single opt in form? (the traffic is 90% men if that helps, so I suppose it isn't completely untargeted in that respect)

2) Given the type of untargeted traffic I mentioned, is there any genre or type of offer that does better than most with this kind of traffic? (I am in the process of conducting tests with various landing pages and various offer types but I was just curious if there was a known type that was good with generic traffic).

    I would think viral video traffic is targetted, not untargetted.

    The fact that it is 90% men doesnt make it untargetted,

    You should keep testing to increase your rate, by tweaking the headline, the copy, adding an image etc.

      I would think viral video traffic is targetted, not untargetted.
      I only assumed it wouldn't be targeted because I couldn't find a common denominator among those who make up my traffic. Maybe less targeted is the better term.

      Well that's the only thing I said I thought made the traffic sort of targeted was the gender demographic.

      My advice would be work on targetted traffic sources, to your squeeze page. Why work hard on untargetted?
      Because I have an awful lot of that untargeted/less targeted less niche traffic. Even if it converted leads at 10% it would be worth it to work with it. I'll also be working on targeted niche sources of traffic though.

      Thanks man, I really appreciate the information and advice. If I tweak the landing page (which right now is a very generic page) I should be able to do a little better. If I ever get near 50% I'll be thrilled.
