Facebook Like Button Question

I had someone recommend a "tip" to me when it comes to the Facebook like button, saying that I could and should make the like button which appears on every page of my site be the like button for my overall site, not for individual posts. So basically rather than having each new post showing ZERO likes when I first put it up, it would reflect however many likes I have for my entire site.

My question is that, while I understand that this is positive social proof and will encourage people to click on the like button... well doesn't the like button need to be tied to each individual post in order to help that post rank for whatever keyword I'm targeting?

If I'm linking back to my site's number of likes, hey that's great, but how does that help me on a page by page/keyword to keyword basis?
