Desktop video recording software

Hi Warriors,

I'm in the process of creating my new product and as a change, I would like to include some step-by-step tutorial videos to better show what I'm describing. I'm new to this and would like to know what screen video recording softwares are out there? It would be nice to have a zoom feature during the video and it must be able to create video for use in web sites, not in gigantic sizes like 100 MB for a 5 min video.

Appreciate any recommendations, thanks.

Here is a nice tutorial on how to use Jing - How to Record Video of Your Desktop for Free | eHow.com

Thanks edv. That seems a nice solution. The drawbacks I see are, firstly it will allow 5 minutes recording maximum, this problem can be solved by recording multiple videos and merging them with Movie Maker. Secondly, I didn't see any mention on a zooming feature, which I would like to have the most.

Camtasia is the only one I would recommended here. Great Zoom and Pan Features, and can export as mp4 ( for web ). It doesn't get much easier.

Camtasia (TechSmith Products: Snagit Screen Capture, Camtasia Studio Screen Recorder, Morae Usability Software from TechSmith) gets my vote, too.

If you're on a tight budget, you can get CamStudio for free (CamStudio - Free Screen Recording Software) and edit the result with Windows MovieMaker - if you're using a PC.

You could use camtasia (payed version) or JING (allso from the same software company) which is free. If you are using a mac I would go with screenflow.

So Camtasia is the winner I think. 299$ price seems a little high but I will go with the trial version and see what I can do, then buy maybe.

CamStudio seems to offer some serious features. I will try that also and see if it can save my budget.

You should indeed try Camtasia, besides the recording, zooming, PIP, and what not, the other features like creating text fields in your movie, surveys in your flash movie, the after editing of mouse pointer features.. All this adds up to a package that is well worth it's price if you are in the video business!

Thanks WebRank1. I did not offer videos to my customers in my products until now, but I think I must get out of my box and catch some trends. I know to invest money on my business when needed, so if I find this video stuff successful and get good feedback from my loyal customers for my new product, I will surely go for a paid option and Camtasia seems to be the ultimate candidate for this investment. I'm looking for both paid and free options to choose from.

Camtasia is the one to go for! If you can't afford to spend $300 at the beginning and want to start off with a free software, then go for the open source CamStudio 2.0.

Camtasia is the best by far. CamStudio is not bad, but the videos it creates are huge.

Not if you use the right compressor.

I use a DIVX Codec and they come out perfect. I only had an issue using the default Microsoft Video 1 compressor that I believe Camstudio comes with.

            I would strongly recommend Camstudio.
