Google Places Question

Hi everyone

I have a quick question - I'm reasonably familiar with Google Places, getting citations and optimizing the target site etc to effect rankings and hopefully get the coveted "A" slot.

My question is, would the process for ranking for multiple terms (in local) be roughly the same as for standard organic listings? ie lots of back links using the anchor text to the homepage, or... places page???

Any help would be much appreciated!

Regular SEO applies to local too, yes (even more so recently it seems).

There's a lot of discussion about this type of thing in the Offline forum: Offline Marketing Discussions

Backlinks are Backlinks, and they're far more valuable in the local market...

And you still need to ping them and use more locally oriented sites.

Ranking for Google Places is a bit different than ranking for organic. There are a few factors that are of great importance here:

      - website local SEO (+merging of the website with Google Places listing)
      - number and quality of citations (it is much better if they are coming from local/niche directories, but these are getting indexed by Google much slower; furthermore, citations do not come all the time as it is with back links, but only about once per month, during the so-called Google Places Update...)
      - number and origin of reviews (as well as velocity and content)
      - completeness of the Google Places Place Page (it must be 100%)

P.S. Content from third-party websites could be coming and automatically be added by Google to your Place Page and is generally appearing in a few different forms, each of which it would be great if you experience:
      - review citations (appearing over the description in the business listing)
      - additional details citations (appearing in the details section)
      - pictures and videos from third-party websites
      - reviews from third-party websites
      - citations from around the web
