How Do You Determine Demand For A WP Plugin?

Hi Warriors!

I have two ideas for WP plugins but I'm not sure how to determine demand without putting my ideas out there.

Does anybody have experience creating WP plugins that can offer me some advice?

    There's a demand in every WP plugin category. The catch is you have to have the best, I mean the best plugin that you can build an entire business around. Take Gravity Forms for example. There were 10s maybe a 100 form plugins, then the Gravity guys came along and built an incredible plugin. That's what you have to do with your ideas. Choose one and be the best, charge for it, support it, upgrade it.

    You could offer free beta testing copies of an early version, which could be really basic, to see what the response is. That's what I did many moons back via DP forums. I was a newbie then so didn't think to see whether anything similar already existed (it did!) but that would be a good indicator too, along with how much it was selling for if it wasn't a free plugin or had a premium version.

    Also, does it address a common need/problem? That's the simplest question to ask. If it turns the page upside down then that's a great gimmick but does not necessarily have much mileage in it.
