Do PDF books open by default with the
Bookmarks (Chapters) showing ?

Or does that depend on the version of Adobe ?

Harvey, I use Open Office to create PDF's. The menu for creating them gives you a choice as to whether the PDF opens with the bookmarks showing or not. The TAB for this is entitled Initial View:
    • Page Only
    • Bookmarks and Page
    • Thumbnails and Page
Perhaps Adobe has a similar menu...

That is interesting - the fact that the software creating
the PDF can specify how it is to be opened.

I am not using Adobe but a software library to create the
PDF. I have just put anchor tags at the start of each
Chapter for the first time and was pleasantly surprised to
see that the PDF opened with the bookmarks showing.

So I will assume that all versions of Adobe reader will open
it similarly. Saves me putting a TOC in the book itself.

      Thanks for the helpful reply

Hi Harvey, the display of the 'bookmarks panel' is defined in the pdf itself. You can define if you want it displayed or not.

Other things you can do are: set initial page, initial zoom, two-sided display, synchronised scrolling, etc, etc. You can also do page-transitions (like powerpoint presentations).

It's all documented in the pdf format specification.

plug: All these settings (even page transitions) are available in my pdf converter.
