Numbers in domain names

What do people think about having numbers as part of the domain name? This is very common in non-English speaking countries, especially in Asia, but doesn't seem to be used much on English language websites. kaixin001.com is a very popular social networking site in China. Any opinions on using numbers in domains?

You basically said it yourself, it is not popular in western countries.
I could guess that is because we like thing to be clear and descriptive and numbers in domain names usually don't add value to it's description or meaning.

I mean, greatrecipes210.com or greatrecipes.com, which one would you think is most trustworthy if you didn't know better?

Numbers in domain names are better than dashes and hyphens. If your desired domain name has been used already then it is best for you to add numbers.
How can you say that numbers in domain name do not add value to its description or meaning? You can short your domain name by adding numbers in domain name like 1and1.com, 2shopeasy.com, or shopeasy4u.com.

That is not what I said. I mean numbers like OP's example (001) does not add value and therefor not first choice for our westerners.
ofcourse your examples make ample sense.

I don't have a problem with it and I don't think it presents any problems from a user or SEO perspective either.

    greatrecipes210.com or greatrecipes.com
Not a chance the second option is available but I'd take greatrecipes101.com in a heartbeat.

Unless people are actually typing in your domain, it doesn't make any difference. Your average web surfer isn't avoiding a search engine listing or a link based on the domain name or TLD, trust me.

If you are relying on type-in traffic and branding, it's a different story.

Only webmasters and marketers get their knickers all twisted over such silly stuff.

No off course the '101' is a great addition, it actually means something.
You are probably right about the webmaster mindset though.

That's the way i'm seeing it. For example 'phoneshop.com' won't be available but phoneshop247.com might be available. If the direct keywords are unavailable, some sort of meaningful number could be a workaround rather than a long URL that looks shady. I'm relying on people to find my site through search engines, and then be confident enough to buy my products. So although i want the URL to be targeted at search engines, it must also be short enough and meaningful in English that people will trust it and it doesn't look like a scam site. I just want to know how Google views numbers in URLs.

I'm very much thinking along the same lines as well.

Generally, I'm not a fan of any numbers (or hyphens) but it can work in some cases.

Yes like the "101" and even "2" instead of "To."

My preference is not to have numbers only because they are ever so slightly more difficult to reach on a keyboard. But with smart phones now accessing the Internet that is a more important decision as the user often has to toggle their keypad to find a number.

I don't think google cares, but you'd have to ask google for a definitive answer.

Exact match domains, TLD extensions, hyphens etc... none of them are going to make or break your site. There are no magic bullets for instant success.

You can find examples to prove and disprove any of the marketing myths floating around the interwebz and far too much time is wasted on little things that really don't matter very much in the grand scheme of things.

WarriorForum by most common beliefs would be an absolutely horrible choice as the domain name for an internet marketing forum. We can all see how that turned out. I'm still not sure what a Squidoo is but they are doing OK.

I see easycash4life as the #3 result for make money online and makemoneyonline24hrs.com at #13. weightloss-hq.biz at #9 for lose weight fast throws a monkey wrench into the .com snob's arguments.

Filter out the nonsense and focus on more important things.

I think that the only number that could work and in certain cases would be "24" or"247".I am aware of some sites here in Greece that use this numbers and are having a success. But in my opinion, i wouldn't recommend it

    who cares about domain names?
How you market it - that`s whats really important!
And domain with a numbers may be even more recognized as lightly exceptional.
There is many examples, i just will not provide links here, as don`t want to give any backlinks, im not doing promo here with this reply to a thread.

    Thank you.

  • It only matters if it makes sense and you have a plan to do something with it. It's unlikely that if you can not brand it anyone will ever type it in. But if your market is in a country that uses it then why wouldn't you? And vice versa.

Numbers in domains can work extremely well, you just have to be careful how you do it.

Domains with numbers. The ones I have seen that are coherent with market terms. Work. I you want a site for lets say? G6 etc.etc.com It could flow for a certain market segment. In my simple strategy with domains in general I stay away from blending numbers with letters.
