Question about homepage !

I've been messing around with the free theme "flexibility 3" and seem to be struggling getting a static front page like in this website.
Barbecue Grills
The bit am trying to do is add posts from 3 different categories onto the homepage, in a similar layout to this site.
Could someone please say whether this is only achieveable by buying a premium theme, or is it a plugin for worpress that allows you to add different posts grouped together in there own category like here !
