What is considered an authority site?

Hi Warriors,

I wanted to ask the question what is considered an authority site?

When I am doing my keyword research, I find a niche keyword which fits my criteria, but am then never really sure what is considered an authority site and would be hard to compete with.

Are these sites, long in the tooth, have loads of content and loads of backlinks to the domain (but not necessarily the page). I have found a few keywords in a niche, have bad on page SEO but good off page. Does this mean it wouldn't be worth trying to compete?

What do you think?

Would really appreciate some guidance.

Thanks in advance.

I judge authority sites by those sites with a high PR (like 5 or higher), and they tend to rank very well for multiple related keywords.

If they have bad on page you can beat them for sure. If they have bad off page you can beat them as well.

Sites with a combination of good on page and off page with many back links to the page I would stay away from.

      Cheers

An authority site is a site that has a huge knowledgebase. Usually over a hundred pages of content, but it doesn't have to be. They are considered to be an expert source of information for their niche.

like it was explained before, if you have strong content, good backlinks, and all that you might be able to take on an authority site with a regular site. It really depends on what they are targeting and how good their on page and off page work is.

I am trying to build an authority site, but they tend to take a long time, so I have my work cut out for me.
