How much money are you willing to spend to get a buyer onto your list?

We all know that the money is in the list. It has been drill down to us by all the gurus out there. I want to pose a question to all warriors. As you all know buyers list more sought after compared to normal subscriber list.

The question is - how much money are you willing to spend to get a buyer onto your list? Or how much it was then to get buyers onto your list?

Less than the total money made by the funnel - so I make a profit :-)

I generally try to make a profit from sale #1, rather than a loss leader in order to get people into my funnel. So I guess to use my formula, you would take the amount of profit you make from the initial sale and I'd be willing to spend anything less than that to get a customer.

If it's a product with a limited or nonexistent backend, I try to get the customer for 50% or less of the sales price.

Loss leaders are a great business model, but you better be fanatical about your metrics if you're going to go that route.

I usually populate my initial list for free, then move the buyers into my other lists and continue to maintain a prospect list.

      Interesting...thanks for the replies.

I'll spend up to $100 to get one buyer. Usually my customers will have to qualify themselves by purchasing my frontends (which is priced between $97 to $197)

I dont bother about the free list(but I do build one)..if a prospect dont invest in my product after me sending him 10 emails, I dont waste my time on him/her. I dont want to deal with freebie seekers!

I rather focus my time and efforts with those who have the money to spend and have shown me they are willing to spend their money on my products.

I'm not Walmart, so I'm not big on losing money on the front end. If the front end isn't profitable I would move on to something else.

Wow, I find that really interesting...

Figure out the lifetime valuue of your customer, if you know that the average customer spends $1000 over the course of a period of time.

Then of course wouldn't it be a no brainer to be willing to pay $100 on average to acquire this customer.

that's a bet I'll take over and over again. and in the process I will be lowering the barrier to entry into my sales funnel by decreasing the price at my front end, meaning more money for me.

I like to generate my list for free, but I plan to launch my first big ppc campaign in 2009, I have a lead capture page that is converting at 40% right now, so I would be willing to pay up to 2 dollars per click, because that same funnel is converting about 10 out of every 100 into the final stage of my funnel

  • Interesting question...

For me (and just IMHO) it depends on the back end metrics I have in place, or what the price of the product is. I have some $5,000 products that obviously I'll spend $200-$1000 getting a buyer (and I'm including affiliate payouts in that price).

I have one product I market that I lose $25 in the front end, but have a highly converting back end system that generates about $1,500.00 over the life of the customer (which typically lasts about 8 months).

Without meaning to ruffle any feathers or offend, anyone looking for "safe" ways, generating only a profit on the front end, or not willing to risk losing a little upfront to get a lot back later just doesn't get lead generation, and will never make REAL money in this business.

I'll end with this quote by T.S. Eliot:

"Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go."

Why not get joint venture partners to promote your product and split the profit 50~50%. Though you make lesser but you still make money. The joint venture partners will have a ready list of protential buyers to your site so you don't need to waste time building a list which is very time consuming. This way you will have more time to find new product to sell and make more money.

    Cheer to your success !

I have heard people say that a buyer on your list is one of the most valuable assets you can have. They are proven to spend money, so there is a good chance they will do it again.
