What Would You Do With This Domain?

A while back, I bought the domain makeshrimp.com - not because I wanted to get into the shrimp niche, but because I saw it was expiring and thought it was a cool name. I thought about selling it, but now I'm thinking it might have some potential as a developed site. According to Google's keyword tool, the phrase "make shrimp" gets 33,100 global monthly searches. What would you do with it? Add some shrimp recipe related content to it, generate some traffic to it and sell it? Maybe add links to some shrimp or seafood recipe books to generate some revenue? Ideas are welcome!

    My suggestion is...

    1. Create few (5 to 7) original keyword rich articles on this domain,
    2. do some seo and marketing , build the traffic and then
    3. sell it on Flippa like website tradding place.

Let me know if you liked this.

Cooking and recipe content would likely do very well with your domain. Information on shopping for, cleaning and cooking shrimp, as well as different varieties. You could focus on long-tail phrases that include "make shrimp," like "how to make shrimp cocktail." In addition to recommending other cookbooks for affiliate revenue, you might also want to consider writing one of your own.

As a complete left field idea, you could also create the site around shrimp breeding. This would attract a whole different crowd, and let you monetize with stuff like aquariums and other equipment for keeping shrimp as pets.

Yeah it's only 12 exact searches, so it's pretty much useless ...

When google started it probably had no one searching for the term google having or not having an exact match domain name does not mean a business will succeed or not sometimes it is a bonus but its not the only thing that determines if a site will do well.

The whole notion that a domain name must have be a highly searched keyword phrase in order to be useful is a whole lot of nonsense.

Content matters a whole lot more than the domain name.

        Much more.

I have sites that rank high in search engines (like Google and Bing) and they do NOT even have a keyword in the domain name.

So, yes, you can develop a site on makeshrimp.com and make a good go of it. How well you do will depend more on the content than how many people search for the keyword phrase "make shrimp."

basickno, Jillycakes, mglw and mj9999 have some good ideas. If you want to make a go of a site on this domain, consider their ideas.

The domain name may be a factor in search engine rankings, but it is not the most important factor and I doubt it is even a highly important factor. It may give a bit of a boost, but it is not going to be the determining factor for the success of a website.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

        I agree,

but the OP stated the number of searches he thought the keyword is getting which means that he was relying on ranking for the exact keyword as a traffic source ...

I agree with Scott. There are more search phrases used with the word shrimp than you could possibly imagine. Thousands of phrases that get only the rare search. That's why I would aggregate RSS classified listings automatically and just let the site run. You would be shocked at the terms you can get hits on that way. Phrases you would never come up with in your most aggressive brainstorming session.

Anyway, I do that sort of thing all the time but don't think many people ever try it. I guess it is just not as exciting as the prospect of getting one 2 word phrase to number one. Which, by the way, is exciting.

As an example, I started a site like that one month ago that has already made $18. Long tail keywords work.

I can't even really think of any affiliate programs that you use to monetize the site. Probably just Amazon for cookbooks, but most people want the recipe when they are searching for it and won't wait for the book. If the domain owner (you) can't find anything to advertise on it chances are you won't make anything from adsense because nobody else will want to advertise on it either.

You may do ok with recipes but personally I think the niche is to narrow to really have any success. Unless you have a shrimp related product (like a deveiner or cocktail sauce etc...) it doesn't make much sense to spend effort on.

You can have everything "shrimp" on your site from how to buy, deveining, preparing, cooking and recipes.

You can add videos to it and make it a fun information site or even a membership site. You can make your our very own "shrimp cookbook product" and market it on your site
Then get some good traffic and flip it.

All the keyphrases below do between 10,000 and 50,000 phrase match searches a month. Keep in mind though that 50% of all searches every day are new. So real searches are more like "how do i make shrimp and grits in a bowl".

Organic listings are super competitive when it comes to recipes. So if you don't want to work really hard at it, you might try some creative use of RSS feeds based on the keywords below that could yield visits based on long tail searches. That could make you a small amount of Adsense dollars each month. At best, recipes do not fetch much for ads.

If not that, start writing a lot.

Gut reaction here. So take this with a grain of seasoning...

A lot has been said here about recipes, and that's fine. There are great ways to make money from recipes (including the aforementioned cookbooks), but what about the other side of making shrimp. What if you made the site about MORE than just COOKING shrimp.

You could bring in interest in raising shrimp, different types of shrimp, different kinds of recipes for preparing them, about different types of shrimp, which ones are where, which ones are better for which types of recipes. Etc.

I don't know if it would be profitable, but you already bought the domain.

Never go by global searches, always go by the exact match. In this case, you have a crappy domain.

Some times you ask and the answer wont be the one you're expecting.
If you do have ideas -like the ones you've mentioned- Test them first and ask questions lather.
Some people are telling you your domain it's a waste of time.
Others -several ones- think the opposite. I go along with them.
Here's why. Have you ever went to a picnic, find a spot with no ants,
placed food on the tablecloth and left to play with your kids?
Few minutes later did your wife started calling you because the food was invaded by ants? Yes?
Well, same thing will happen with your "makeshrimp" domain...
Once it's there will get "Visitors".
Do some work with it, keep for at least four months and and flip it...
By the way, I love shrimps with champagne.

Thanks for the suggestions and feedback, guys (and gals). I'm going to offer it for sale and if I get no buyers, then I'll hold onto it and at some point try to develop it. I do like the idea of approaching it from the "how to raise shrimp" angle, as I hadn't thought of that.

    shrimp recipies.

I have a friend that does this with a similar cooking niche and make a full time job out of it.

Literally quit his job. Not going to say the niche, but you might have something here.
