Need to pick your brains again - Promise it won't hurt!

We have a client that wants to start his own office furniture exchange site. He's a member of 4 of them himself as a seller and wants to start is own.

The premise being that office furniture companies list their products on the site and when they are sold, the site owner will get a finder's fee.

This is NOT a shopping cart. Buyers contact the owners/companies who are selling the products.

I'm thinking a CMS or membership type site software script thingy something-or-other?

These companies would need to be able to have their own logins so they can upload their products (and delete when sold) to the site.

Since I've never done anything of that nature yet, I'm looking to you all to help me find the best possible software to fit this idea. And any other suggestions/recommendations you may have.

Thanks in advance.

I would think that Joomla would work well for you what you are planning. Joomla can be a bit daunting at first, but it is pretty cool with what you can do, and of course its free.

    Barbara,

How about an auction script? It would allow sellers to
create accounts, submit items for sale and set either
Buy It Now prices. It would also handle the sales process
and allow the site owner to charge fees.

I can recommend: Professional Auction Script Software by PHP Pro Bid

Thank you, Matt and John, for your replies.

Matt - I thought of Drupal and Joomla also, but was concerned about the learning curve to get them up and running, and designed. If I was able to do my own Oscommerce ecommerce site without a lick of prior php knowledge, I should be able to tackle these others, but I don't think they'll want to wait up to a month or more for that *grins* However, I still may download a copy and play with it on my own site ... may end up being easier than I think.

John - I will have to see if the program you recommended allows for disabling the Buy Now ... as the buyers buy directly from the companies that list ... not through the site. But you may just have an idea there.

      Off to check it out.

Just wanted to do a quick follow up.

The PHP Pro Bids that John has recommended above does not allow for the disabling of the auction/buy now function, which is something I would have needed since what we need is mostly a leads generator more than anything.

I contacted them to ask if PPB would be suitable and that was the conclusion we came to.

However, they did say that are currently in the final stages of PHP Pro Ads, which is quite similar. They gave me access to their demo areas (user and admin). There is a Trade Leads Ads function - no expiration date and no price.
Plus the individual furniture companies can create their own accounts, add their product images and descriptions ... and pay the finder's fee to the site owner (my client).

        This should do the trick.

I emailed them back for what the price will be on PPA, system requirements, etc.

    Hey Barb,

Yeah, I'd say that any CMS system would work well for something like that, especially when the buyers have to buy directly from the companies.

If they didn't have to purchase that way, then I'd go with John on the auction script.

If you go with the content managment system, go with WordPress or Joomla. They have some great templates for these types of sites.
