How many emails do you think is enough?

I just checked my inbox and one HIGH PROFILE marketer sent me 4 emails yesterday. On average they send 1 or 2 EVERY day...I stopped opening them months ago but I'm on their list to monitor their habits and behaviour. I open one up every now and then but come on 4 in one day!!!

Would love your thoughts on this one so please comment below.

  • I think so much of it depends on the list and what kind of relationship you have with the marketer.

I generally think that one a day is right to continue a relationship and keep up to date. I'm happy for an occasional extra email on top of that when there's an occasional late breaking story, or a last minute webinar reminder.

And, you can occasional end up on autoresponder series, as well as main lists, which does inflate the numbers slightly.

But, once a day is a good rule to keep me interested.

    1. The overlap between "high profile marketers" and "most successful marketers" may be a smaller one than many people imagine;

    2. If they are highly successful, what you'll see from them will be part of a split test (the truly successful ones are permanently split-testing) and may be abandoned next week because it underperformed, and without knowing the results you can't learn much;

    3. Why are you not unsubscribing from people who send you 4 emails a day (you have nothing to learn from them)?

2-4 a week, TOPS. Maybe it's just me, but any more than that and I will think they are trying too hard.

Every couple of days is what I shoot for. You may be on more than one list for that marketer which could be why you got 4 of them. I would say that's a little excessive though.

    I say 1-4 a week is plenty.

    Hi:

    Shireen here :-)

Normally when I prepare a free 7 day minicourse, I'll send out only one email per day.

After they bought from me, the follow up emails will be once a week.

    Hope it helps :-)

if there wasn't an error or similar with their provider 4 in one day would have me clicking unsub.

depends on the nature of your content and whether or not you've told your new sub how many times they should expect them. good rule of thumb is put your self in your subs shoes

Sending 4 mails per day will over push all the limits. I would not like to see my subscribers getting unsubscripted. But 2-3 times a week will do a good job for sure.

4 emails a day is way too much for me. I would unsubscribe immediately. I am typically happy when people send me approximately 1 email a week, maybe 2.

It depends upon how much value is contained within
    each e-mail.

If there's a lot of valuable content and relevant offers
that meet my needs, then frequency is less of an issue.

If I'm getting value as a subscriber then daily e-mails
    aren't a problem.

If I'm not getting consistent value then even monthly
    e-mails would be too much.

      My thoughts exactly Shaun!

Unfortunately, in the IM niche, getting 4 emails in one day typically means they are the type of email you don't want to read, lol.

I was recently on the list of a very well known Internet Marketer who claims (and I believe it to be true) to have a list of over 300K... Yet this "guru" sent me an email everyday (quite often even two a day) and every single email was pure junk! It was either an adswap or promoting a product. Now, I know that they have to make money too (not like I don't send promo emails to my list, lol) but sending me the spammy looking "get rich quick" type emails for the next "push-button software" that "creates $135,892.14 in only 21 days!" type stuff...

I was actually on the his list for awhile, as a buyer, that is the only reason I stand on their list so long is because I had subscribed to a 6 month course. Eventually I just unsubbed, assuming I would lose my weekly lessons, but I didn't (yes, I was on the buyers list and still getting all the junk emails) - To their defense, the training was really good though

And this is actually a trendy fashion in the IM world right now, I call it "churn & burn list building". I have come across many people teaching their students to send one/two emails a day promoting products and adswapping for traffic...

In fact I recently bought a WSO that taught this method... "Adswap in the morning, promo at night"...

Sadly, this IS working and I despise the concept of this method but still keep end up buying from the WSO creator mentioned above, when using the method above, lol... Then I remember and unsub again, lol... (untill I buy their next WSO, :p)

I personally try to never send more than one email a day or one broadcast rather. The reason being is because they may already be getting an email that day from the regular AR sequence so I don't want to 'blow up the inbox', but sometimes this is very effective for the varing timezones...

I have been on the lists of many marketers that start out providing tons and tons of great value (often when they are still "unknown" and have less going on in the way of JVs and what not) then as they progress and become more successfull they start to provide less and less "free content and value" and more to "here's a great new WSO"...

In fact, I have seen this happening lately with the development of a partnership between two "intermediate" (ie. really succesfully but not a "guru") and even though they have both been putting out a lot of good stuff (even better when they started working together) the "free content vs. promo" ratio swapped and now I get 4 promos to one "value" email.

This has been kinda disappointing as my two favorite marketers seemed to be dipping into the "guru spammer" category, but now that all their new launches are lined up I think the valuable content will come back from them.

As an IM'er we have a lot of competition and I think what happens is subscribers will "forget" about you, so you must always keep reminding them while still not "bugging" them.

Sorry, got to rambling a little, let me try to wrap this up...

Bottom line we must TEST TEST TEST and find a Style that fits us and most importantly ALWAYS BE PROVIDING VALUE! Even if you are promoting a product, try to find a way to do it in a valuable way - maybe make a walk-through video, offer them a bonus and always be TRANSPARENT!

      Good Luck

The soap box is now free... :p

It's really easy to get this number of emails from someone if you subscribe to more of their offers. 1 email can lead to 2 then 3 then 4 if you get on more of their lists.

Even if they use a sophisticated list management system like iContact you can still get more than 1 email if you use different email addresses.

As others have said if there's value in those emails why unsubscribe because they send you one too many? I get many subscribers leaving my list simply because they're overwhelmed with too many emails from everyone as a whole.

In my opinion it's all about what you can get from the information they give you in their emails, not how many times they email you.

I think 1-3 a week is sufficient unless you really are offering value and great content.

That old hash in your email is bonkers, some of these so called guru's must burn their lists up pretty quick!

It seems to me like a lot of IMers kinda like the idea of being on these big lists to keep up with the trends!

I want my subscribers to be interested in me and to be looking out for the next email. I don't want to bombard them with my emails. This works really great with my list. My average open rate is around 50% and my highest open rate was 99% xD.

4 in a day may be too much, it could be you subscribe to same marketers multiple campaign.

I only send twice a week to my list. I think 8 to 10 email per month is good.

I would "test the waters" by sending emails out at different lengths of time.

It really depends on the market.

From experience, every market is at least slightly different then others...

John Carlton seems to have no "method" of how he sends his emails...it may be a week or 2 and then I'll get two in a day.

4 emails a day is beyond the pale, way excessive. I prefer to receive 1 email per week, otherwise i have no time to read it.

I've noticed that too. The longer people are in the IM game, the more they move from valuable, interesting emails to promotion-only emails.

Ah, well, that probably means it works.

For me it depends on what the content of the e-mail is. If I get really great information once or twice a day, I probably will stay on the list. If somebody is just sending me clickbank offers everyday, then they are gone.

That's an instant unsubscribe for me.

Just read a book called Ca$hvertising. Very good book. Have learned a lot from it. According to a study,

31-35% email recipients prefer one email per week
18% email recipients prefer 2-3 email per week
13% email recipients prefer one email per month
12% email recipients prefer one email per day
10% email recipients prefer 2-3 email per month
6% email recipients prefer less than one email per month
    and ... 8% replied Never

    I'm in the 31-35% category.
