What is the etiquette to get a mention on someone's mailing list?

Since I am still fairly new to this IM game, I'm trying to get my product mentioned on others' mailing lists. Yes there is something in it for them, so I'm not just asking for a freebie mention.

What is the etiquette here? So far I've managed to piss a couple people off by PMing them.:confused:

I'm really new to this area of expertise. How do I go about getting a solo ad? I just ask people? That's what I'm doing and they're seeming like I'm doing something spammy or something.

I just saw the JV forum. I guess I ask in here? Sorry for these dumb questions, like I said, I'm new to this area of IM.

Yeah you should look into that section of the forum! Just browse some threads and you will get the general idea! Good luck!

        Hi Jennifer,

I'm definitely no expert, but this is how I see it (and my sincere apologies if I have landed you in hot water, I should have probably expanded a little more on our previous conversation).

By saying "I'm trying to get my product mentioned on others' mailing lists. Yes there is something in it for them", I guess you are looking at some form of JV opportunity.

To me, finding a potential JV is no different than marketing to a potential customer/client. So, by simply PMing someone, no matter how enticing your offer, this can be viewed in the same way as sending an unsolicited email to a customer. Additionally, I would hazard a guess that many members tend to ignore PMs unless it's from someone they know, as they are typically inundated with spam requests.

So, to go back to the "no different than marketing to a potential customer", there is unfortunately no short-term solution if you have a specific person (or people) in mind that you wish to approach. It's about building trust and a relationship. This may involve becoming a customer of theirs, a regular visitor and contributor to their blogs and websites, a member of their newsletter. You may eventually be able to build a suitable relationship over time that will make approaching them far easier.

If, however, you are simply looking for JV's from like-minded marketers, then you may wish to use what you currently have at your disposal. Your blog, the JV section of the forum, your signature, your mailing list, etc. I, unfortunately, know very little about solo ads, ad swaps, and the like, but Steven Jones (above) may be willing to expand on his post!

Sorry, probably not what you want to hear, but this is simply my voice of inexperience.

        Cheers

Apparently my offer goes in the "affiliate program database" I think.

Take a lesson inspired by John F Kennedy...

"Ask not what the list owner can do for you,
ask what you can do for the list owner."

I dislike it if someone's first approach to me is to ask
me to promote their offer to my valued list of subscribers.

    Talk about a turn off.

Instead, get to know the list owner first. See how you
can help them. Develop the relationship further and then
earn the right to even discuss a mention.

"You can get everything in life you want, if you help
enough other people get what they want."
    Zig Ziglar

Remember that a list owner puts their ownr reputation on
the line each time they make a recommendation to their
    list.

The problem being....how do I know which people have lists? Currently two people whom I am well-acquainted with on this forum neither have lists.

Just do a little research on the people in question. Do they have a blog advertised in their signature? Do they use their real name as their forum handle? If not, find out their real name through their forum profile, contact details, etc. Complete a google search "person's name + blog". I would hazard a guess that the vast majority of people in the IM niche would actively advertise their full name somewhere.

Once you've located their blog, does it have an opt-in box/page? See how long their blog has been running, as this may give you a round about clue as to how many (approximate) subscribers they have, e.g. the blog's been running for a month, then subscribers are unlikley to be in the tens of thousands, if the blog's been around for years, and they have lots of quality content, this could be an indication of big their list is.

However, there is no evidence to prove that the opposite may be true in both cases. Join their list, see what sort of content they provide over the next week or so. Using Shaun's suggestion, ask if they would be willing to allow you to advertise their service (WIIFM - What's in it for me), as you offer such-and-such a service and you believe that many of your potential customers would like to take up your service, but need help with the starting point!

You could also try google (or any search engine) search of your niche. So, literally type in the exact phrase, no matter how long, and see what it comes up with. You may find that you discover a lot more than you intially bargained for.

If it's what we were discussing, then simply type into google the 5 word keyword phrase, and see what happens. A***** R***** W****** K*****d L***

I'm really sorry this is all a bit cryptic, but I obviously don't want to reveal your business model and ideas, as that's your call...but I'm hoping you kinda understand where I'm coming from.

        Cheers

If you don't mind spending a bit of money ($25mo) safe-swaps.com is a great site for buying solo ads from reputable marketers.
