So I was just posting and I found myself wondering what would be better, to have links that go off my site to the product page open in a new window or the same window? What do you guys think? I'm kind of leaning towards same window...

If it's for a product on my site I keep it in the same window. If it's going to a completely different site - like an affiliate - I open it in a separate window.

I think you will find most people do the same.

Personally, I would always open in a different window. If they accidently close the new window, they still have the original site in front of them.

I would use a new window so that your site would stay open in their browser. if you are going to new page on your own site with navigation, you could have the new page open in the same window.

If the new page is on your site, and your visitors are coming from landing apges, and the new window is going to have the action you want them to take, then I would lean strongly towards opening in the same window.

Good points. New window for external links and same window for internal links seems to be the consensus.

It should depend on your market: computer literate users/visitors can easily over-ride whatever you want to do with the settings of their browser...

It totally makes sense to open external links into a new window. It keeps people on your site. I like to use some jQuery code to insure that all external links get sent to a new window. It saves a bunch of HTML editing in adding the target="_blank".

I also like to style the links differently so that people recognize that it is a link and that it is going to open a new window.

I have a tutorial and code available from the link in my sig.

    Cheers!
