Google doesn't seem to be picking up my links??

I couldn't find any post like this before, sorry if it has been discussed already, but here goes:

I have had a site for a little over a month now. I have been building backlinks like crazy ( articles, forums, blogs, etc ). I have been checking using Marketleap.com, also typing in link:mysite.com in google.

I have been stuck at 3 links only showing picked up by Google. Yahoo on the other hand has been steadily growing daily. I'm up to 305 and growing. I've also noticed on marketleap.com that just about every website listed there seems to be very low with Google. For instance, there is one site with over 10,000 links showing for Yahoo while Google only shows 200.

What's up with this? Why is it so hard to get your links indexed by Google? Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's simply because Google does not show you all of the links that they know about. If you look at your site through Webmaster Tools, you can generally see more links than what's available through the link: syntax. Google admits to only showing a random sampling of the backlinks that they know of.

Most SEOs just use Yahoo! Site Explorer for backlink checking, as they do seem to show everything that they know of. And given the way that Google crawls the web, if Yahoo! has it, then Google should know about it. At the end of the day, Google is sort of "SEO friendly," at best - they don't want to give us TOO much information that might help us.
