Is It Better to Be a Company with an Aff Program or a Company People Wish had an Aff Program?

There are plenty of companies with affiliate programs.

You promote their stuff, make a sale and you get a percentage.

People use various methods of picking companies to promote.

Some will look for the best products.

Others will look for the highest commission.

Still others will look for the highest conversion rates.

The smartest ones use a combination of factors.

And, of course, they use a variety of methods to promote those companies and their products.

Then, there are those companies you wish had an affiliate program, because you find yourself recommending them to people frequently anyway, and you wish you could get a percentage of the sales you send their way.

Sure, some people will look to an alternative--to a company with an affiliate program so they can promote that.

But, not all of them measure up. You might find an alternative with an affiliate program, but when you're talking with friends and family, you recommend the other company, just because they are so awesome (or whatever).

The thing is, though, that if that company is so awesome, non-marketers will be talking about them. People will just have to tell their friends about them. They'll like them on Facebook, they'll blog about it, they'll have tweets and status updates with the link, "You gotta check this out!" And so on.

Non-marketers don't care about making a commission. They just want to share cool things with their friends.

So, while you've got disclaimers out the wazoo (thanks FTC!) that you're making money if someone buys through your link, there are all these other people out there that don't need a disclaimer, because they aren't getting a commission. They aren't making money. They're just telling their friends about this awesome company or product.

So, as a product seller or service provider, should you worry more about having a great affiliate program with an appealing commission or building a company, product or service that's just freakin' awesome?

    Why not focus on both?

By not having an affiliate program, you will lose referrals and huge JV opportunities.
    Affiliate program + Awesome product/service = Winning!

Nothing works without a great product neither affiliates or non affiliates will be eager to recommend a poor product. Amazon has great products and services, it's commission structure is not overly generous yet it has thousands of affiliates because of it's branding and good service.

    It basically goes like this:

    Create a product or service

Have an army of affiliates promote it for you.

    You'll start seeing bigger numbers.
