what program should i use to make videos? is it hard to make them, like will it take me weeks just to learn the program? i'm usually pretty good with these things, but i've still never made a video before. also, i'm on a pc, not a mac.

any recommendations? thanks a lot!

also, if you're just making a video to promote a product, how long should it be? if people are anything like me, they'd lose concentration after not very long, so what's a good length?

well this are the bests for me

    muvee
    camtasia
    sony vegas (great for editing)

As for lenght of videos I would recommend about 5 minutes. I personally hate when someone has 30 minutes long video.. it`s so boring, not to mention you can`t rewind it. Video should be short, telling you all important details and information.

If you want something quick and simple that will record a screencast video of up to 60 minutes in length for the Pro version (it is limited to 15 mins if you want to host it on their servers), I highly recommend screen-cast-o-matic:

Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing.

At only $9 per year for the Pro version, it is an absolute steal. It'll pay for itself hundreds of times over if you create a bunch of videos with this tool over the course of a year. It's definitely one of the best IM investments you can make that will give you an insane ROI if you utilize it!

Additionally, it is incredibly easy to use, just select the area on your desktop that you'd like to record, and just hit the record button! You don't even need to install it on your computer if you don't want to.

    Hello!

I highly recommend Camtasia Studio (specially for beginners). It is very easy to learn and the best part is that you can try it out for FREE for 30 days.

I tend to prefer free open source programs whenever possible.
You might like to know there is something very satisfying about paying over $200 for commercial software, and knowing you "did the right thing."

Commercial software companies need honest customers to actually pay for their software.

    skwurl,

What kind of video are you looking to make?

Some of the programmes suggested are great for making screen capture videos but if you're just looking for simple product promotion videos consider using Movie Maker. As you're on a PC you should find it's already loaded for you.

It's a basic way of creating videos but don't let that lead you into thinking it won't do the job. It's very simple to learn and there are plenty of tutorials available for free. Here's a link to a really handy forum if you decide to give it a try:

I am a Video Creator myself and I use Adobe After Effects and Sony Vegas for my Videos. After you learn these two programs, you will never look at any other software for creating Videos

Camtasia is great. However... if you're a Windows user you have a free video maker. Windows Movie Maker is more than sufficient for many tasks

Wow, there are a lot of different suggestions, and a lot of them are good. It all depends on what you are trying to do. All you said was 'what programs should I use to make videos?' From the responses mentioned, that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. So let's break it down.

If you are trying to make videos that show your computer screen, such as training of some sort, you will need a program that can capture your screen (obviously). Camtasia is the big daddy of these programs and along with that comes a pretty hefty price. Camtasia does minimal video editing as well but I always use other programs for editing. If you want something like Camtasia but don't want to pay the price, you have some free options:
    Jing
    FastStone Capture
Also, recently Quicktime player gives you the option to record the screen as well. However, I can only confirm this for the Mac version of Quicktime. Maybe somebody can check on the PC version?

Now, if you want to 'make' videos, apart from the lighting, shooting, ect. you will need some sort of video editing program. Yes, Windows Movie Maker is free and it's starting to show that you get what you pay for. WMM is great in a pinch but it's not something you should seriously use if you plan to make more than one video in your marketing life - and you should be making as many as you can. The problem with WMM is that the blue title screen with white text that WMM provides literally screams 'AMATEUR' whenever people see it on Youtube (or anywhere else). The hoards of skateboarding kids and Beiber fans that use WMM have dropped the credibility of videos that use WMM. Pair that with the fact that web videos are now able to be seen in HD and that Google is trying really hard to incorporate TV with their services. What video would you think gets more views, the one that looks like a 14 year old made it or something that has some semblance of quality to it? I know what I'd pick. Anyway, enough with my diatribe.

The best bang for your buck is going to be Sony Vegas. It's cheap and does everything you need it to do. The learning curve is not that hard either, and once you do learn it, it's not too difficult to move to another program if needed.
Another great option is Adobe Premiere Elements. It's the same price (if not lower) than Vegas, it works well with all of the other Adobe software such as Photoshop, it's been around a long time, the learning curve is about the same as Vegas, and if you ever get really serious about making videos, it's extremely easy to move up to Adobe Premiere Pro. The interface looks almost identical.
Somebody did mention they use After Effects and Sony Vegas together and once you learn that, it's all you need. They are right....sort of.
If you learn After Effects, which is going for around $500 and has an extremely steeper learning curve, you wouldn't even need Sony Vegas, it can do everything you need it to do right there. However, that's like using a nuclear bomb to kill a fly, a bit overkill. And, if you're willing to spend that much, I'd spend it on Premiere Pro.

You asked about length of video. This has been asked a bunch of times on here and I'm always quick to say 2-2.5 minutes max. If you are making training videos or any type of video product then length doesn't really matter. If you're making videos for marketing, even 2 minutes can be pushing it. Here's some stats that I just posted on our blog the other day:
    • 20% of online video viewers click away in the first 10 seconds or less
    • By 30 seconds into a video, up to 33% of viewers have moved on to something else. At the 1 minute mark, 44% of viewers have moved on, and almost 60% have left by the 2 minute mark.
    Pretty crazy huh?

Anyway, sorry about the long a** response. As a video editor of over 10 years and as a video marketer of over 3, I get a little passionate about it.
If you have any more questions, fire away. Also, my sig has a lot more posts regarding video. There's also a free hour long video on video production and marketing on the site if you're interested. And, if you need some more help with creating, shooting, editing, and marketing your video; we are offering 8 hours of video training. You can even get the first 2 hours of it for $7. Check it out if you feel it might help you. Thanks

You can change the colors and backgrounds no problem. You can also import new fonts.

IMO if you are starting out and want a free software then WMM is a good option.

Go pickup a copy of camtasia and start filming screen capture videos. You'll need a web cam and a mic, unless its built into your comp like it is on a Mac.

But either way, its super easy to do. You could make a video in just a few minutes. I usually like to show people how to do cool stuff on my computer. So I would figure it out for myself first, then do it again while recording my screen and walking them through the process, step by step.

camtasia is the best to use when making videos and i would not use no other, your video should be about 5 mins and stright to the point but at the same time smooth and you will be good...
