best-aviation-sites.com is this a scam?

Hello,

my name is Sojin, I am the webmaster of Warbirds over India and received the following email advising we had won an award and could load the award logo on our site?

I am concerned about giving them the password to our website to alter code on it? and I am concerned about loading their code onto our website anyway, if its a logo surely it could just be a JPG image?

Is this a scam or legit? - any idea's, does anyone know this group?

Hi,

Dave Mitchell here from
"Best-Aviation-sites.com."

I am sorry but I was not able
to find your contact name on
the website...

Just wanted to quickly send
you an email to let you know
that you have been nominated
as one of the "Best Aviation
Sites On The Internet" and have
WON!

(Congratulations)

Our team researches the internetOur team researches the internet
looking for the best sites in the
area of aviation and using a
VERY STRICT set of guidelines.

We then award a small handful
of sites with this prestigious award.

Because you have been nominated
and have won this award you get a
very special honor:

We have created for you a special
logo that you can easily stick on
your site that recognizes your
site with this honor.

=====================================
This exclusive award logo will
help your site in a few ways...

First - It will give you enhanced
credibility. Your visitors will see
this exclusive logo and know that
you have been distinguished with
this honor.

Second - It will let your site
visitors know that you are continuing
to help the "Aviation" community
and that your site offers great content
and provides a wonderful user
experience...
====================================

Now, all as you have to do to get
the award is go to this page
that I have setup for you. The
link is right below...

Just copy the code and paste it on
your webpage and the award logo
will show up on your site.

Now, if you're not much of a
techie (like myself) that is okay!

One of our programmers will
stick it on the page for you
and of course - will do it at no charge! (-:

The website explains everything.

PLEASE NOTE:

or something, I am sorry... It is not!

Doesn't look so much like a traditional scam as an attempt to get backlinks to a particular site.

The email has come from Nyback Technology, Inc. which does internet marketing promotions.

i don't know if it's a scam or not, but all i have to say is that if you want it on your site, do it yourself, and don't let anyone else have your logins and stuff to do it. definitely a no-no.

      Hi Sojin

I don't think that it's a scam just a cheeky way of getting links back to the site. Best-Aviation-sites.com was only created 2 months ago so any award from them wouldn't have any real kudos. I would email back and say thank you and that they are welcome to give you the award on their site, but at present you do not want to change the appearance of your site. You will probably find that the award will be forgotten about if you don't link to them.

Am I wrong here? He hasn't even done his research properly, the so called awards are for aircraft sites and aren't warbirds birds of prey?

Warbirds are military aircraft, often time historic such as the U.S P-51 Mustang and the U.K.'s own Supermarine Spitfire.

And this does seem like a clever way to get links.

Well, never give them your password to edit your code that is something YOU should be doing. On the contrary, it is not a scam but I still wouldn't recommend putting their code on your website.

I received a few of these for a particular site. They are "legit" awards, but really just an attempt to build backlinks in a more credible way.

I personally just deleted all the "awards" emails I got... The way I feel about it is the "award" shouldn't have anything to do with me linking to their site...

    Good Luck, Hope this helps

If your thinking this is some scam
or something, I am sorry… It is not!
This paragraph is the (most prominent) giveaway (of many), and alarm-bell-ringer.

First, why would they feel the need to reassure you that it isn't a scam if lots of people hadn't already told them it looks like one (which it clearly does)?

Secondly, the author apparently missed school the day they explained the difference between "you're" and "your" (among other days he missed). How much credibility does that have in a "professional communication"? :p

Thirdly, the email is from an internet marketing promotion company.

Fourthly, best-aviation-sites.com was only registered in February.

Wake up and smell the diesel-oil ... of course it's a scam: it's a made-up award to get a backlink.

Really ... I could do better myself. :p

ok thanks for that, I saw on the bottom of the website it said :

This site is not affiliated with any brand, logo or airplane corporation other than what is described in the TOS.)
This site is in no way affiliated with any airplane brand.(c) 2005 and beyond. All Rights Reserved. By visiting this page, you agree to terms and conditions. You must be 18 Years or older to view this content. "Dave Mitchell" is a pseudonym for the owner of this airplane site. This site is owned by Nyback Technology
So does that mean he's lying about who he is? ie not really named Dave Mitchell? so who is the Nyback Technology? and whats the value in having a logo on our site in anycase? , how do they get a back link from a logo? is it somehow able to hide that in the coding?

        regards

      WARNING!!!

A "clever" internet marketing/advertising specialist is targetting unsuspecting museum and aviation (and other sporting/hobby) website managers with a con to get them to place an advertising banner for his websites on their websites in the guise of an award for being one of the best aviation websites.

      Quote:
If you feel that your site is worthy of our prestigious airplane award or know of a site that we should review and potentially honor with "The Best Aviation Site" award, please contact us by clicking here and submit your request.

Please note, you can't buy an award logo off of us. Our awarding is based on the fact that your site or the site you nominate is adding value to the art form the site is about. Also, please note that we get over 130 requests per week to review aviation related sites. So if you have a site or want to nominate a site please review our award guidelines located here.

The aviation industry is very large and their are a lot of sites that are doing a really good job online and we want to make sure we recognize them and honor them with this award. If you have a site that talks about aviation, airplane buying, airplane ownership, flight training or other general aviation information - you might qualify for an award.

We take great pride in making sure we only issue these award logo's to the best sites in the aviation world so make sure that if you recommend a site that it is a good one!

He promotes this in unsolicited emails (spam) and on a seperate website under a false name!

There is a very similar bestaviationsites.com which seems "unrelated" but seems to be the inspiration and cover for this con!

      XXXXX

Read that forum for the background.

But spread the word, copy the link of this KP thread XXXXXX and put it in emails to everyone involved in aviation or even other "enthusiast activities" on your contact list, post it on other forums.

"Let everyone know what he is up to", let it go viral - lets show "him" the real "power of the internet" - smiles
