Australian Domain $220 name change fee

I have been looking to buy some Australian .au domains, 2 registrars I have looked at both charge a $220 change of ownership fee. This sounds outrageous, is this a ICANN fee? Anyone know about this?

Opps, I meant, looking to buy some with the intention of building some sites and selling them in the future as a going concern.

The fee does seem way too high.

A $220 fee to change a domain name owner is in my "little" opinion outrageous.

Each one I look at, it appears the same. Is this a new outrageous fee on .au domain names? Cheers Chaps.

For quite a few years there was a single gatekeeper to buying .au domains. This had a twin effect: 1. high prices 2. a vetting process which hindered domain speculators from grabbing everything.

Now the market is largely deregulated but you still need to have a registered Australian business to get a .com.au for example

There is a hangover effect where many .au registrars still charge extortionate prices.

crazydomains is one registrar who has fair .au prices (around $12)
I'd suggest if the price is $220 with them, then that's the true market price, and it's likely there's some kind of Australian government charge involved making up the bulk of that.

This thread seems to mention a company that is cheaper:
Plus they are an auDA Accredited Registrar

    Hope that helps

That company doesn't seem to be active anymore.

Anyway, looks like a $220 Aussie tax against the dreaded internet, or a "User Fee" as the Aust Gov call taxes now.
