How well does domaining (earnings from parked domains) actually work?

I've seen whole forums dedicated to domaining, and heard of people earning large amounts from parked domains. I also see incredibly rare one-word domains left parked all the time, so they must be earning a killing.

Is anyone here on WarriorForum a successful domainer who can give a quick rundown on how it works?

I understand making money if you have a premium, one-word domain through direct type-in traffic. But if you're an average IM without enough moolah to buy these premium domains, how can you expect to get any direct traffic to a parked domain with essentially no content?

Companies like GoDaddy normally make their domains parked, they place advertisements on them as soon as you register with them. If you opt to collect this revenue they charge you a small amount per month, whatever the domain earns goes in your pocket.

Domain Parking is not what it used to be. As you observed, you can do well if you have a domain name that people would naturally type into their search bar. In fact, I have a domain that has earned me as much as $700 in a single day, just from parking (very rare though).

For the most part, parking domains for me is just a way to earn a few extra bucks while the domains wait to be sold or developed. As a business model, parking is really suffering.

That being said, you don't need an expensive premium domain to receive decent positive cash flow. What you need is a domain that contains a keyword string that people search for frequently. All of my parked domains that are making some (small) income are domains that I registered for $8.

Most of the parked domains for over a year hardly earn enough to renew them. Some may be luckier but not me.

That's true with most parked domains. But luck has very little to do with it. You have to have the types of domains that get type-ins or have traffic.

There are three ways to make money from domain parking.

In one method, people typo-squat a popular brand or company. Say for example someone buys Amaxon.com and parks it. There will be lots of direct-traffic coming to the website by people who type the wrong spelling in the address bar by mistake.

In the other method people buy expired domains which are popular and get traffic from search engines and also direct traffic/referral traffic because the website was up and running earlier and the owner forgot to register it.

The third method is popular for one word domain names which people tend to type in the browser address-bar directly, expecting a valid website.

For me personally, domain parking never made much at all. I tried it for a couple of years a while back, then turned to just buying expired domains to use or resell. Of course, if a parked domain got a load of traffic, it could possibly make some money that way.
