An offer for my parked domain @ $8000!

About a year ago I went on a domain buying binge @ GoDaddy and then setup them up on a system that was supposed to bump up my PR and forgot about them for a year. Renewal came up so I checked into them and yup, got ripped off again, no PR on any of the sites at all, no traffic even, they were making false stats to show me those creative but slimy buggers.

I dumped all the bad domains and kept about 10 and parked them until I could find time to build them one by one. Then, something really cool happened, I got an email for one of my premium dot coms and he asked how much I was selling it for? Dunno, not into the buying/selling of domain game so I replied and asked if he was willing to make an offer so I can consider it.

He came back and gave me a ball park figure of $8000USD but I would have to get a certified domain appraisal from an approved company before he would consider it. Now my wife thinks I should sell it and cash in but I'm not in a hurry and the reason I'm here is to generate money on an on-going basis, not just a one time cash deal.

It's a travel related domain that targets a small niche (specific location that has lots of tourists). If he is offering 8k for it then x10 means he could make close to 100k with this site easy if done correctly.

How do I keep my domain and make that kind of money? Would it be best to write articles and sell affiliate products? How about adsense? Seems like those wouldn't make that much money. So then do I put a travel search affiliate on the site or contact some hotels directly in that area and rent them the site once I get high rankings with it? Questions, questions, questions, but I hope you get the sense of what I'm trying to ask?

There are oodles of different ways to monetize a travel website, what way do you suggest I go about based on what I just told you?

Thanks for your suggestions!

Be careful about those types of offers .. Lot of scammers using that con to get you to go to one of their "appraisers" and steal your info

Sorry, but it is very likely a scam.

Did he provide a list of "approved" companies? That's probably how he's getting his money. He gets you to pay for an appraisal and either he owns the appraisal company or he's an affiliate.

Run! Don't walk. Don't pass "Go." Just run away.

I don't know of any legitimate domain buyer that would require you get an appraisal. There is really no way to get an accurate appraisal. The only thing that you can do is check against comparable domains that have sold recently. You can do that for free. And, really, that's the buyer's job. I mean, if I want to buy a domain, I'll offer what I'm willing to pay. It's up to the seller to decide whether that's a reasonable amount or if he wants to hold out for more.

A buyer will try to get a domain as cheaply as possible and not go by what some appraisal website says, which are often inflated figures anyway.

If someone is asking you to pay money for an appraisal, it is almost 100% likely to be a scam. It is done so often it is known as the "appraisal scam".

As far as keeping your domain, all you have to do is renew it

Making money from it on the other hand is another story. You should probably use the search here and try to get answers for your questions. You really do have too many questions to be answered in one thread and it is likely that someone has already asked them and they have been answered before.

You just have to ask yourself one question... why would
I need an appraisal on a parked domain name? I either see
some value in it for what I want to do... or I don't. It's not
like there is any history or current cash flow that would matter.

    It's a scam...

I'm afraid that you have been contacted by a domain appraisal scammer. It's all over. They own the domain appraisal sites that they want you to get the appraisal at and they get the money when you get that appraisal.

Then it's bye bye. No sale. Don't fall for it.

Definitely a scam, get those emails a lot. I always reply that this is how much the domain is worth for me and that is what I will sell it for.

If he is not sure about the domain value for himself, he can go and apprise it as much as he wants and come back to me when he know how much he is willing to offer.

And that makes it a well-known "domain appraisal scam", I'm afraid.

So it's good that you decided to keep the name rather than selling it; and good luck!

As said above, all appraisal requests like this are a scam, it is on the buyer to know what they are buying, not you to pay for an appraisal to sell your own name.

Poster's most likely a "newbie" and unaware of the scams / scammers out there ... Thankfully, he came to WF BEFORE making an EXPENSIVE mistake!

One thing I've learned about scammers (other than they are lowlifes) is that it's takes two willing / active participants to pull it off successfully!

People need to educate themselves and trust thier instincts BEFORE they jump in versus complaining about getting burned after the fact ...

Do your "due diligence" before clicking that "send / pay now" button people!

LOL... Sorry, it isn't really funny because you were probably somewhat excited about it. How are you going to break it to your wife?

No need to repeat what everyone else has said, they are right though!

He wants to give you 8k for a domain? It seems like he priced it out already, what's the point of an appraisal? If he wants an appraisal, tell him to pay for it himself. What does he need you for? You can pay anyone you want for an appraisal for any domain you want.
