I'm a newbie to this forum ... been lurking for a weeks and am now hoping to become an active member. This is my first thread and I'm starting with a very basic question:

I'm helping local businesses -- typically contractors, sole proprietors, etc. -- improve the ranking of their sites and conversion of visits to leads.

The SEO/marking principles espoused here generally seem focussed on creating adwords-centered, niche-keyword sites ... do people here think the principles are the same for 'local search?'

Yes, except local keywords are usually easier to rank for. You still need to build backlinks and include your keywords in the title, on the page, etc.

SEO is the same for any type of website you are trying to rank well in the search engines. There are both on page and off page factors you need to consider.

Rather than re-invent the wheel here is a very cheap WSO that sums up everything you need to follow for good SEO practices:

There is nothing new or groundbreaking in there but that's because basic SEO has not changed over the last 10 years. What works now has always worked and will continue to work.

You will be using the same SEO practices, there is not much difference. It is the same as ranking for any other term. Just focus on your on-page and off-page SEO and you will be fine.
