Advertising Adult Industry - is it the same?

Could someone use all of the same techniques here and apply it to an adult industry website?

I believe you could, although the adult industry is more saturated than many of the BIG niches out there. (including web hosting which is the one I am tackling at the moment, it is huge.) You could however attempt to find a niche by researching, then apply backlinks for SEO.

You are narrowing a lot of options though, for example article writing which would be difficult to do because of "family friendlyness"

Just trying to figure out if marketing is marketing is marketing. No matter what product you have - do all the same rules apply.

I think they do - just a different audience perhaps?

Yes, I think they do too. As others have said, you have some more limited options in a few cases, but you also have already very motivated buyers of your products, so I think it evens out.

I've been in the adult industry since 2008. you can easily do top 5 figures if done right. 6 figures is possible but it takes a lot of attention to the sites.

From what I understand a lot of the online techniques we use today, were originated in the adult online industry years ago. ...so they should work, now.

The main thing to remember is that the adult industry is absolutely full of spam already. So when you are doing your SEO you need to focus on high quality.

Other than that, I guess people may search differently than in other niches (more image searches maybe)...

    Just a couple of thoughts...

Obviously there are some different tactics in play. For example TGP and MGP pretty much doesn't apply in the non-adult world. And, as said above, articles are pretty much a no-go.

      Why would it be different?

The real question is why would you want to go there? I've tried to promote it a long time ago (when I was young and stupid), and even then it was very saturated niche... I've been out of it for over 6 years now, but I am sure things only got more competitive. With all the torrent sites people are no longer willing to pay for porn.

But you can make a lot more money helping people to improve their lives, and this niche is much less saturated in my experience.

Helping people improve their lives in what way?

I'd want to go there cause I've been in the adult industry for 11 years - yet I know nothing about REAL internet marketing.

Well, as most are saying, the market is highly saturated because it is of course, a highly profitable niche but it's quite a freakshow, you have to be on your toes 24/7. SEO is radically impossible unless you have deep pockets, even paid advertising, no matter where you look, will be much more expensive than just regular keywords. Unless you come up with a very unique product but good luck with that :p

Adult is the same as a very competitive saturated niche. You really have to hussle or provide something worthwhile. I like how the cam forums are working it... providing the infrastructure and the 'models' do all the work and promo.

It's actually very easy to make money in the adult world if you can find the right niche, and while finding a niche like that may sound like a difficult task, it's really not. There are lots of strange people out there that are into even stranger things. Almost anything you can imagine can in some way, shape or form, be turned into a sexual niche. Use your imagination, then check with what ever keyword tool you use and see if you can find something with a lot of searches per month and little or no competition. If you can find something like that, you have found a possible goldmine.

I myself just recently found a niche like that. This niche I am working in has over 120,000 searches per month and pretty much no competition. My site ranks number 1 on Google's 1st page, and number 1 on Yahoo's 3rd page. I don't have many backlinks, far less then the thousdands of backlinks my competitors have, and whats best is I haven't really spent a dime to make all this happen.
I spent 2 years trying to make money with CPA, PPC, etc, and never really had much success. It wasn't until I made the switch over to the adult world that I started to actually make some decent money and yes I used all the techniques (plus some new ones) that I've learned here on the WarriorForum to make this happen.

I would say that there is far more opportunity to take what you learn from the adult industry and use it here.

I've twice had a chance to do some marketing in this area, but it's not sat well with me so I've passed. The guys who got those gigs did VERY well, and we all could learn a lot.

I started in adult and moved to mainstream in 2007. It's very tough to get started in adult now. The Internet is saturated with free content. In order to succeed you must either very savvy or very sleazy. Pick one.

Yes the marketing is the same but more intense. As someone already mentioned the area is already saturated with spam and free content.

You have to really pick a niche where the market includes those who are those looking for an experience and not just a few moments of "special time" . Actual physical products sell well and have extremely high profit margins. These sell well to both male and females.

You also have to expand your mind about who your market is.

Many are stuck with the idea of some sweaty dude in the dark staring at the screen hoping his wife doesn't walk in. However professional men and women make up 40-50% of the online viewers now. Wives mothers and grandmothers. Find a way to bring them in and you have a goldmine.

Definitely. And sex always sells. I can tell you that myself. Sex is simply appealing to a lot of different people and it is pleasurable. Anything that maximizes pleasure will sell to any consumer.

  • I have a self-help blog which borders on Adult. I'm doing a case study of my own improvements, and because I've seen nothing on the sort I hope (when I'm ready to show and market it) that it picks up traction. Definitely going to have to look into having plugins that ask people to enter their age before being allowed access.

Same principles apply, but you can't do it in the same places that you do for other niches, there are restrictions and so forth. Fortunately mine should pick up (when I release it (currently documenting it) ) through word of mouth.

    Should be fun.

Wow. A lot of info here. I guess a little about my background. I started my company in 1999 - it ran on faith and persistance - it continues on quality and persistance.

Would you believe I've been a webmaster this long of an adult site, and I barely know anything about internet marketing, yet my company processes almost 1 million dollars this past year.

I really know NOTHING about marketing. I'm not really diggin the adult webmaster forums - I want to change the direction of any advertising we've previously done, and do what prem suggested above - we're working to cater toward the business men.

I am hoping to take the info here - apply it to my company and then next year do 2 mil =) Wouldn't that be nice?

  • Actually, a certain Warrior used to work with adult sites. He put what he learned to use in his succeeding businesses, and has been VERY successful. Sorry I can't mention a name, but that might not be something he would care to divulge on an open forum.

Its kinda impossible to use the same advertising techniques when it comes to adult industry, lets take adwords you simply can't use it to drive traffic to an adult site.

Similarly, most of the high authority article directories don't accept articles which are adult in nature & not intended for family reading, so article marketing will also be a big no like adwords when it comes to adult industry.

Most website owners do not want to deal with adult niche so link building opportunities are quite limited. Not sure about the conversion ratio not being in this niche myself but I guess it would be pretty low as you can get so much adult stuff online for free.

I disagree with both these statements. While yes, "mainstream" article directory sites may be off limits to adult content, there are still plenty of high ranking article directories in the adult world as well, and as for link building .... I've been building an insane arsenal of high PR backlinks to my adult sites, and it hasn't even cost me a dime.
There are also tons of high PR adult social networking sites where you can post links and articles, there are high PR link directories that you can place your links on, and so much more.
Someone else wrote in this thread, (I can't remember who) that most of what people do in mainstream internet marketing today is actually based on old school tactics used in the adult online marketing. Think about that. Any tool you have or use for mainstream marketing is probably already there in adult marketing as well.

    Hi guys,

I'm an SEO newbie, but a PPC oldie. I'm trying to get some links for a website that sells adult toys, but haven't had much luck yet finding anything half decent? Could anyone point me in the right direction, or is that just too silly a question by me....

Generating traffic/advertising on adult sites is fairly easy. Generating quality (paying) traffic on adult sites is a whole different matter. SEO was always hands down the best way to generate quality traffic in the adult niche but also the hardest to acquire with the fiercest competition.

There also can be a whole mess of legal things you have to keep in mind when producing sites which can be a hassle in itself. I haven't looked into this area in a long time but I recall there were various issues involving processing payments due to the 'nature' of the business and also getting approved by processors to process credit cards was a hassle as the niche is considered 'high risk'.

Not that difficult anymore. Even paypal will process payments for marital aids and other novelties. Which was a no-no a few years ago and quite a few high risk processors have popped up.

However the regulatory issues involved in operating your own site can send you running for the hills.

In my opinion, affiliate programs are the only way to make money in the adult industry these days without it costing you a mint in regulatory and other fees. Some of these programs pay really well. A lot better than CJ or Linkshare.

I think viral works better than seo alone.

Some people build adult teaser videos as a bait on youtube and then backlink it to their adult site, I've seen this do well for some. These fake adult videos on youtube get millions of hits fast!
