I would still use .com personally. A lot of the general public do not even know .mobi exists (I asked the same question to a lot of people)

    Neither.

If your normal website is mywebsite.com then your mobile website should be m.mywebsite.com.

I am putting up a site for my father and he wants it to be seen on all things mobile. I thought there be some advantage of using a .mobi domain.

If you are just making a unique mobile site and NOT a mobile version of another site, then yes, use the .mobi domain. That is what it is there for and it tells people that the domain is more than likely mobile friendly.

If you are making a mobile version of an existing site then I would use the m subdomain as Matt Cutts (Google) suggests in the video above.

While the Voice Of Google has spoken, you can kill two birds with one stone. You can build standard site and add free plug in to make it mobile optimized when someone is searching from mobile device. I would still get .com.

As I say that, though, I personally like to also pick up the .mobi. I just believe .mobi's will have more importance in the near years to come.

        Plug in is
        WPMS MOBILE EDITION

I also add Google XML Sitemap for Mobile

If you are ever unsure about things like this just watch what the big boys are doing:

    m.google.com
    m.facebook.com
    m.youtube.com
    mobile.ebay.com
    mobile.twitter.com
    mobile.wikipedia.org

    Seeing a pattern there?

they are doing it for seo ... why do a .mobi .. when your .com holds that much link juice and traffic! (like these sites do)

My suggestion is to buy both. I would use the .com as my primary and the .mobi as a redirect for specialized audiences.

In my humble opinion, you can never go wrong with .com
