This is one of the questions that I am asked about almost on a daily basis.
This is very important question and also perhaps the most misunderstood and confusing:confused: term online. So, today I am going to explain, 'What Exactly DUPLICATE CONTENT Is?'
Here is the definition:
Duplicate Content: It is that content (article, press release and story etc) which is used on the Different Pages of the Same Website or Blog.
For Instance, We can see the same news on the different websites. From same I mean exact (word to word). Whenever a big story breaks then it comes on hundreds of different websites. Now, in the Google's eye it is NOT DUPLICATE CONTENT since it is on the pages of different websites.
If it was repeating on the different pages of the same website (let's say same story on page 1 then on page 9 and then on page 18 of the same website or blog) then this story (or content) will be considered as DUPLICATE CONTENT. Many people do this to increase their authority and to show the Google that they have more content then they actually have. In short, they try to fool Google. They do it by changing the title of the content (article, story etc) and the body remains same. Now the Google is No Fool. It has started understanding the tricks that these sorts of people play.
Now the very Important question arises, 'Does Google penalize (like banning those websites in its search engine results) these websites?'
The simple and straightforward answer is -----------'NO'.
Google never penalizes those websites. What it does, it simply picks up one of the pages of that website which has the same content (article, story etc), show that in its results pages and ignore all the other pages of the website or blog with the same content.
