Run a membership site. It will give you a CONSISTENT monthly income.

However it can be hard work updating the site every month.

You can also take this idea, make a course, such as a 3 or 6 month course on something. Then you just make the content once and drive traffic to the site - it's not permanently residual, but it's a lot better than a single sale and you don't have to continue creating content.

There are only really 3 ways to make money online.

sell stuff, sell other people's stuff, or sell your services (consulting, seo, writing, blah blah)

There are no "hidden" ways to make money online.

You just have to figure out a way to get people to buy stuff by mastering one traffic strategy and sending that traffic to an offer that converts.

Focus on that, don't get bogged down by techy minutia, and you will figure it out.

If you're knowledgeable about something then why not start a forum?

They're harder to get off the ground these days. But if you're prepared to put the effort in then it can be worthwhile. My friend runs a forum that makes $2000 a month, and it doesn't even make my list of the top 750 forums (link in .sig). He only started his forum 6 years ago, so it hasn't been around forever.
